is it OK to reject a candidate based on their social media?

A reader writes:

I have a conundrum related to a candidate I’m scheduled to interview next week.

The candidate’s resume included a link to their LinkedIn profile. As part of their work experience, they mention they’re a “content creator” and include a link to their accounts on various social media platforms. Browsing through some of their posts, I started to form a first impression of this person that is somewhat unfavorable; their online personality rubs me the wrong way, and they are extremely invested in something I vehemently oppose (technology that has a massively negative impact on the environment and no positive, real world benefits).

I realize this person may conduct themselves completely differently in a professional setting, but I’m not sure how to shake this negative first impression. I wouldn’t be their manager, but I would be working with this person on a fairly regular basis.

I answer this question — and two others — over at Inc. today, where I’m revisiting letters that have been buried in the archives here from years ago (and sometimes updating/expanding my answers to them). You can read it here.

Other questions I’m answering there today include:

  • I manage a manager who’s uncomfortable discussing staff performance
  • Is my reply to LinkedIn requests too aggressive?
