We had an employee, Sarah, work for us for 11 years and and then leave for a new job. She gave her two-week notice and we gave her a goodbye party. A part-time employee moved into her position.
Now after five days, Sarah wants to quit her new job and come back. I feel horrible because the part-timer who took her position is very happy with working more hours. What is the best option here? Isn’t it wrong to tell the part-timer that she will go back to her old schedule because Sarah wants to return? How do I know Sarah will not quit again? This has been so stressful for me.
I answer this question — and two others — over at Inc. today, where I’m revisiting letters that have been buried in the archives here from years ago (and sometimes updating/expanding my answers to them). You can read it here.
Other questions I’m answering there today include:
- Can I give my employees gifts from my side businesses?
- At what size does a company need a dedicated HR person?
