September routes roundup: British Airways returns to Tanzania after a 13-year hiatus


British Airways has announced major developments in its international schedule for Summer 2027, including a new triangular route to Africa from the British capital, as well as some changes to its flights in Latin America, such as new routes, and additional frequencies.

London Gatwick – 2015

Starting May 29, 2027, the oneworld member will introduce the London Gatwick–Kilimanjaro–Zanzibar–London Gatwick triangular route, which will operate three times a week using Boeing 777-200(ER) aircraft, offering three cabin classes: Club World (Business), World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy), and World Traveller (Economy).

As per the press release, these flights will operate throughout the 2027 summer season, concluding on October 31, 2027. British Airways will stand as the sole operator in the United Kingdom–Tanzania market, and the fifth European carrier to serve the African nation.

The ZNZ-LGW segment will be operated on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday

In addition, British Airways will be implementing updates in the Americas, with Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Saint Lucia, and the United States being the affected markets.

New route

 

Buenos Aires – 2018

After a three-year hiatus, the airline will resume nonstop services between London and Buenos Aires. Since October 28, 2023, it has been operating flights via Brazil—initially routing through São Paulo and subsequently Rio de Janeiro—a schedule that will remain in place until March 27, 2027.

Santiago de Chile – 2025

British Airways will hold fifth-freedom traffic rights on the Buenos Aires–Santiago de Chile route and vice versa, as is currently the case on the Rio de Janeiro–Buenos Aires-Rio de Janeiro service. Until the early 2000s, the airline operated the London Gatwick–Buenos Aires–Santiago de Chile route and vice versa using Boeing 747 and Boeing 777 aircraft.

As of March 28, 2027, Rio de Janeiro will have the aircraft’s full capacity dedicated to its market once British Airways removes the extension to and from Buenos Aires. The service will switch from the current Boeing 777-200(ER) to the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

Air Canada

The Star Alliance member airline will launch five new intercontinental routes from Canada, operating from Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. Most of these will be flown using narrow-body aircraft, while two will be operated with wide-body aircraft, specifically the Airbus A321XLR and Boeing 787 Dreamliner, respectively.

Alaska Airlines

Beginning in October, the airline will deploy Boeing 737s for the first time on inter-island Hawaiian routes, which to date have been served exclusively by Boeing 717-200s.

In accordance with our database, Alaska Airlines will operate three daily round-trips between Honolulu and Kahului as of October 3. Flights AS 1416/1415, AS 1426/1425, and AS 1436/1435 will be served using Boeing 737-800 aircraft configured with 159 or 161 seats.

Flair

Flair Airlines will expand its network to the Dominican Republic effective this December, utilizing Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft during the 2026/2027 Northern Winter season. The expansion introduces a new destination in the Caribbean nation: Puerto Plata.

La Compagnie

Starting April 21, 2027, the airline will launch flights between Düsseldorf and Newark, which it will operate using Airbus A321neo aircraft with a capacity of 76 passengers in a single-class business layout.

Daily except Wednesday and Saturday

 

La Compagnie will be the only airline with operations in the Düsseldorf – Newark market.

Cabo Verde Airlines

The carrier is adding a second route to Recife.

As of December 12, Cabo Verde Airlines will resume services between Espargos and Recife, flying once weekly with its only Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft configured for 174 passengers. Operations were suspended in early 2020 prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, at which time they were served by Boeing 757 aircraft.

Saturday

 

Currently, it operates one flight a week between Praia and Recife using Boeing 737 MAX 8s.

Frontier

Colombia will become Frontier’s first market in South America.

The airline will launch three new routes from the United States, which will be operated to three different Colombian cities. All of them will be flown from the same airport: Orlando.

These routes had been operated by Spirit Airlines until shortly before its shutdown.

Aurigny

Jersey – Grenoble, Aurigny’s new route.

The Jersey-based carrier will initiate a seasonal service between Jersey and the French city, scheduled to operate weekly from December 19 through February 6, 2027. According to the airline’s website, the route will be served using 72-seat ATR 72 turboprop aircraft.

Delta Air Lines

For the Northern Summer 2027, Delta Air Lines has announced the commencement of two new intercontinental routes to be operated with Airbus A330 aircraft. One will be from Boston and the other from Detroit, serving Italy and Greece, respectively.

Discover Airlines

The German airline will introduce new international routes for the Northern Summer 2027, which are now open for booking on its website. All of these routes will be operated on Airbus A320-200 aircraft with a capacity of 180 passengers in a single-class configuration.

Effective December 18, Egyptair will launch flights to Sweden with the Cairo–Stockholm route, which will be operated four times a week using Airbus A321neo aircraft seating 182 passengers.

In August 2027, the Spanish carrier will introduce a new seasonal route connecting Castellón and Ibiza, offering a weekly frequency operated by regional partner Air Nostrum with ATR 72-600 aircraft, featuring an all-economy configuration for 72 passengers.

Based on its website, Iberia (Air Nostrum) will offer this service from August 2 through August 23.

ITA

Beginning on March 28, 2027, ITA Airways will operate flights between Rome Fiumicino and Verona with three daily frequencies. These services will be performed using Airbus A220-100 and A220-300 aircraft, configured for 125 and 148-150 passengers, respectively.

Luxair will expand its network to Albania by introducing the Luxembourg–Tirana route effective March 29, 2027, using its state-of-the-art Embraer E195-E2. According to the carrier’s website, the route is scheduled as a year-round service deployed on a twice-weekly basis.

MedSky Airways

On September 17 at 12:44 local time, MedSky’s first flight from Tripoli arrived at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, marking the launch of the first of two new routes to France. This service, in accordance with our database, was operated by the Airbus A320 with registration 9H-MSB, and the flight lasted almost three hours.

That same day, the Libyan airline launched service between the French capital and Benghazi, which was performed with the same A320 aircraft.

Denpasar–Melbourne: Transnusa’s new route.

The Indonesian carrier will inaugurate services between the two cities effective October 19, offering a daily frequency utilizing Airbus A320-200 aircraft throughout the 2026/2027 Northern Winter season.

Vietnam Airlines

The airline will begin services between Hanoi and Ahmedabad as of October 25, marking its first regular route to the Indian city. According to its website, Vietnam Airlines will operate four flights per week using Airbus A321-200 aircraft.

Riyadh Air

Milan, the new European destination for the new Saudi airline.

Starting December 16, Riyadh Air will launch flights between Riyadh and Milan Malpensa using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. It will operate four weekly frequencies, offering 1,160 seats per week in each direction.

The Riyadh-Milan Malpensa route will mark the carrier’s official debut in Italy.

Air Cairo

Three days after Egyptair, Air Cairo will operate its first flight between Cairo and Stockholm. According to its website, the service will run twice a week utilizing Airbus A320neo aircraft with a capacity of 180, 186 or 188 passengers.

Air Cairo and Egyptair will stand as the leading Egyptian carriers operating between the two nations. Both will compete directly with fellow Egyptian airline Nile Air, as well as Sunclass and Norwegian, the latter two serving this market on a seasonal basis during peak travel periods.
