Sentai Filmworks and Iconic Events are bringing Ninja Scroll back to Canadian theatres for the first time in 4K. The film originally debuted in Japanese theatres in June 1993 before being given a North American direct-to-video launch by Manga Entertainment in 1995. Sentai Filmworks has held the North American rights to the film since 2012. The company debuted the 4K remaster of the film earlier this year at the Berlin International Film Festival. The movie was most recently screened theatrically in 2024 to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
Ninja Scroll was directed and written by Yoshiaki Kawajiri for Madhouse. The film was scored by Kaoru Wada.
Jubei Kibagami has always been the master dealer of death, but in rescuing a ninja woman from a monster he sets loose a chain of events that puts death in his own veins and sends them on a nightmarish odyssey through a surreal and devil infested ancient Japan. How do demonic possessions, an annihilated village, and a man Jubei thought safely buried in his past all connect? If Jubei can’t piece the blood-soaked clues together, his only consolation will be that he won’t live to regret it for very long!
Written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Ninja Scroll was originally released in 1993 and is now considered a truly seminal work in anime filmmaking. The restoration, a meticulous process that involved a 4K scan (3840 × 2160 pixels) of the original 35mm negative, was supervised by director Kawajiri.
The film will open on October 4th. It will be available both in Japanese with English subtitles and with an English dub. To purchase tickets for the subtitled screenings, click here: Cineplex | Landmark. To purchase tickets for the dubbed screenings, click here: Cineplex | Landmark.
