Zelda Fans Give Twilight Princess an Impressive Fan-Made HD Upgrade

More than a decade after The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess last received an official remaster, fans are still finding new ways to improve Nintendo’s classic adventure.

While players continue to hope that Nintendo will eventually bring the game to Switch or Switch 2, one fan project is already giving Twilight Princess a significant visual makeover on PC.

Fan Project Rebuilds Twilight Princess Textures

A creator known as TiredAndOnFire has shared new progress on an ambitious HD texture project for Twilight Princess.

The project focuses on manually reworking the game’s original textures at higher resolutions rather than simply applying automated AI upscaling. Although the overhaul is still unfinished, a partially completed version is already available.

Players can combine the unfinished texture pack with other existing texture projects to avoid missing assets. The creator has specifically pointed to Henriko’s texture pack and the Twilight Princess HD textures as possible companions.

The approach is particularly interesting because it aims to preserve details that can disappear during conventional upscaling.

In one comparison, TiredAndOnFire showed an original texture alongside versions from the Henriko pack and the new project. The fan-made version retains clearer fictional lettering and preserves environmental details such as moss that are less apparent in the competing texture.

The Project Goes Beyond Higher Resolution

The Dusklight HD project isn’t simply trying to make Twilight Princess sharper.

Its creators are also targeting elements such as color timing and bloom in an attempt to recreate aspects of the game’s original visual presentation.

That makes the project different from a basic texture replacement. The goal is to produce a version that feels more faithful to the original artwork while taking advantage of modern display resolutions.

The work also aims to address some visual differences introduced by Nintendo’s official HD release.

Dusklight Makes PC Improvements Easier

The texture project is designed to work with Dusklight, a fan-made decompilation that allows Twilight Princess to run natively on PC.

Players still need their own copy of the original game, but the native PC version provides greater flexibility than traditional emulation. It also supports various quality-of-life improvements and makes modifications such as custom texture packs easier to install.

That gives Twilight Princess fans a growing ecosystem of unofficial upgrades while Nintendo remains silent about a new official release.

Twilight Princess Still Has Plenty of Visual Charm

Even with higher-resolution textures, some aspects of Twilight Princess‘s original visuals inevitably show their age.

Its more realistic art direction has not aged quite as smoothly as The Wind Waker‘s stylized presentation, and improved textures cannot add new geometry to environments designed for older hardware.

Still, the game’s distinctive art direction remains one of its strengths. Characters, locations and atmospheric effects continue to give the adventure a recognizable visual identity.

A carefully crafted texture overhaul can therefore improve the presentation without completely changing what made the original game distinctive.

Nintendo Still Has the Final Word

For now, Nintendo has not announced an official Twilight Princess release for Switch 2.

That leaves fans with options such as the Wii U version, unofficial PC projects and texture packs. TiredAndOnFire is continuing to develop the HD project and has been sharing progress with followers through a Discord community.

The creator is also working on other ambitious projects, including an overhaul of the God of War Origins Collection.

For Twilight Princess fans, however, the appeal is obvious. Until Nintendo decides to revisit the game officially, projects like Dusklight and this new texture overhaul are giving the classic Zelda adventure a chance to look better on modern hardware.
