We read with great interest the recent article by Hart et al1 titled “Perforin Generated by CD8+ T Cells Exacerbates Inflammatory Bowel Disease–Induced Depression by Promoting CXCL9 Production in Intestinal Epithelial Cells” in Gastroenterology. This study offers novel insights into the gut-brain axis showing that perforin from CD8+ T cells promotes CXCL9 production in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), leading to neuronal endoplasmic reticulum stress and depressive-like behaviors in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
