Introducing The Jackson’s Art Podcast

The Jackson’s Art Podcast explores what it means to make art through the voices of established artists and the materials they use. Every month, we share stories and expertise from those who create, be they contemporary artists or historical figures. To encourage curiosity and invite dialogue, we take listeners out of the gallery and into the spaces where art is made, shaped, and brought to life. Our podcast consists of three distinct series: Ask an Artist, The Matter of Colour, and Rivalries and Friendships in Art History.

In this first episode, hosts Lisa Takahashi, Evie Hatch, and Louise Reynolds come together in the Jackson’s Studio to introduce the podcast, reflect on its beginnings, and discuss its three distinct series. Join us and discover what’s ahead.

Ask an Artist

Ask an Artist was originally conceived by artists Laura Boswell and Peter Keegan, and later hosted by Peter and Tom Shepherd, who built a loyal community of listeners and guests over the years. When Peter and Tom decided it was time to move on, they asked Jackson’s to become the new custodians of the project. The previous episodes of Ask an Artist can be listened to in the Ask an Artist Archive.

We’re honoured to be taking the helm at Jackson’s. Our host, artist, writer, and workshop facilitator, Lisa Takahashi, leads insightful conversations with guest artists in their studios and at exhibitions and events, capturing both their practice and the atmosphere surrounding their work. Lisa explores the many facets of being an artist through conversations with a wide range of practitioners and people from across the art world. We’ll talk about creativity, making, exhibiting, and everything in between.

The Matter of Colour

The Matter of Colour is presented by Evie Hatch, art historian, pigment specialist, and co-creator of Jackson’s Pigment Stories book and online series. Evie explores the fascinating histories of artists’ colours, from antiquity to the present day, and the ways in which their stories are woven into wider histories – those of industry, medicine, alchemy, chemistry, and geography. These expanded histories offer a new perspective on the colours you use on your palette and those you encounter on the walls of museums and galleries.

Rivalries and Friendships in Art History

In Rivalries and Friendships in Art History, artist, art writer, and educator Louise Reynolds joins Evie Hatch to uncover the clashes, romances, and friendships that shaped artists’ lives, revealing the human stories behind art history. Connections between individual artists remind us that, at the heart of art movements and the development of visual culture, were individuals with real personalities, fears, and dreams. Louise and Evie will also bring attention to lesser-known artists, offering fresh perspectives on established narratives.

We’re really excited about this next chapter and absolutely delighted to be taking the podcast forward, and we hope you’ll join us for what comes next.
