Animating Halloween | Yami Shibai 16 Eps 3 and 4 Review

Episode 3: A Peaceful Village

Plot: A criminal goes into hiding in a seemingly peaceful village. He’s happy to accept their kindness, but he quickly realizes this village isn’t as peaceful as he thought.

Breakdown: Mmm I have mixed feelings about this one. It does get creepier near the end, but they don’t do enough with the sequence. It’s just creepy looking eyeballs and mouths over and over.

Also, because the guy seemingly was involved in a murder and was otherwise a criminal on the lam, you don’t really care that much that that happened to him so…eh. Not to mention he’s a total idiot. Oh this little village has people who walk around like zombies and the few lucid people got together to happily clean up his new place and give him lots of food. Nothing suspicious here….

How many stories in this series are just “Someone moves to seemingly nice town, but it turns out the villagers are crazy/evil people”?

Episode 4: Following

Plot: A man brings a beautiful kimono to a tailor to get it stitched into a tie for him to wear. The tailor realizes a tragic secret about the kimono as she works.

Breakdown: I also have mixed feelings about this one, but not as negatively as “A Peaceful Village.”

This one did have its creepy moments and a more creative foundation. I was liking it quite a bit even if the death was kinda goofy. It was the final shot that made me rethink my position. It’s such a drastic tone change, and it really jostled me when trying to sort my feelings on the episode as a whole. It’s not a bad twist. I just don’t see why that part needed to be in there. I mean, she already killed one person, so why go the extra mile like that?
