Turkestan, Sauran & Otrar: 3 Silk Road ruins in Kazakhstan, compared

Turkestan’s modest tourism industry is mostly based around a UNESCO site: the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. But Turkestan – sometimes spelled as Turkistan – was a stop on the so-called Silk Road, and the ruins of its Silk Road city are right near the mausoleum. We visited the ruins and the mausoleum, but also, on our quest to see lots of Silk Road sites, we visited two other medieval-period Silk Road cities near Turkestan as day trips: Sauran and Otrar. Both of these are also in ruins, and both are about an hour’s drive away.
