Marcin Blacha calls Songs of the Past setting a natural fit but keeps Witcher 3 plot secret

Marcin Blacha, story director at CD Projekt Red, has said the setting of Songs of the Past, the new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, “felt like a really natural way to go.” He made the comment in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun published on Thursday. He gave little else away.

Blacha has deep ties to the game. He held the same story director role on The Witcher 3 when it first launched and also worked as a lead writer on it. That makes him one of the people most responsible for the ending many players assumed was final.

The basic premise of the add-on is already public. Geralt of Rivia, by now retired, is pulled back into action to help his old friend Dandelion. The expansion arrives about a decade after the original game. Rock Paper Shotgun describes it as the White Wolf’s new last hurrah, a role previously filled by the Blood and Wine expansion.

So far, CD Projekt Red has shared an official teaser trailer and shown off the setting along with a handful of the characters Geralt will speak with. The plot is another matter. According to Rock Paper Shotgun, the studio has kept story details tightly guarded. Its writer also went through other interviews about the DLC before putting questions to Blacha directly, with the director parrying attempts to draw out specifics about the narrative.

That caution fits the material. The Witcher 3 built its reputation on its writing and quest design, and its expansions were praised for stories that stood on their own. Revisiting Geralt after his arc seemed closed carries obvious risk for a studio that wants players to experience any twists unspoiled.

For players who value The Witcher 3 mainly for its characters and choices, the Dandelion angle is the clearest hint of what Songs of the Past will focus on. Geralt’s friendship with the bard runs through the series, and a story built around a favor between the two suggests a more personal tale than a world-ending threat. That is still a reading of the premise, not something the studio has confirmed.

The interview does not include a release date or platform details. For now, the public picture of Songs of the Past consists of the teaser trailer, the revealed setting and a short list of characters, plus Blacha’s description of the location as a natural choice.
