To use a Mega Stone in Pokémon Champions, equip the stone that matches your Pokémon, enter a battle, press the R shoulder button before choosing a move, and confirm the Mega Evolution. The transformation happens before the selected attack and lasts for the rest of that battle.
For players asking how to use Mega Stones, Pokemon Champions requires the matching held item and an unused Omni Ring activation for that battle.
Your trainer’s Omni Ring acts as the Key Stone, so you do not need to equip a second item on the trainer. The Pokémon still has to hold its species-specific Mega Stone, and a team can activate only one Mega Evolution per match.
How to Equip a Mega Stone
Follow these steps before entering a battle:
- Open the Box from the main menu.
- Select the Pokémon you want to Mega Evolve.
- Open its held item menu.
- Choose the matching Mega Stone from your inventory.
- Confirm the item and save the team.
A Venusaur needs Venusaurite, a Lucario needs Lucarionite, and a Garchomp needs Garchompite. A stone cannot activate a different species, even when the names or types seem related.
Equipping a Mega Stone uses the Pokémon’s held item slot. That Pokémon cannot also carry an item such as Leftovers, a Choice item, or a type-boosting item. Account for that tradeoff when building the rest of the team.
How to Mega Evolve During Battle
After the correct stone is equipped, start a compatible battle and select the Pokémon. On its move screen, press R to activate the Mega Evolution prompt. The Mega icon should light up. Choose an attack, and the Pokémon will transform before executing the move.
The activation is optional. A Pokémon holding a Mega Stone can fight in its standard form until the timing is right. Waiting can conceal the intended transformation, preserve an ability interaction, or prevent an opponent from immediately targeting the team’s main win condition.
Once the Omni Ring has been used, no other member of that team can Mega Evolve during the same match. A transformed Pokémon keeps its Mega form after switching out and returning. The stone is not consumed, so it remains equipped for the next battle.
Every Compatible Pokémon Champions Mega Stone
The current compatible Pokémon list contains 64 species and forms that can Mega Evolve. Charizard and Raichu each have two possible Mega forms, and the equipped stone determines which one appears.

How to Get More Mega Stones
Pokémon Champions distributes Mega Stones through tutorials, seasonal reward tracks, event rewards, and other progression systems. The Mega Evolution tutorial provides an early introduction to the mechanic, while seasonal passes have included stones such as Dragoninite, Emboarite, Feraligite, and Meganiumite.
Pokémon HOME transfers do not move held items. Sending a Pokémon from another game therefore does not bring its Mega Stone into Champions. Recruit or transfer the Pokémon, then obtain and equip the Champions version of the required stone from within Champions itself.
Some promotional rewards also add a Pokémon and its relevant stones directly to the account. Claim time-limited distributions from the gift or event menu before their deadline, then verify the items in the held item inventory.
Why the Mega Evolution Button Does Not Appear
If pressing R does nothing, check these common causes:
- The Pokémon is holding the wrong species stone.
- The stone was placed in inventory but never equipped.
- Another Pokémon already Mega Evolved in the same match.
- The selected format does not permit that Pokémon or mechanic.
- The game client or battle ruleset is out of date.
Return to the Box and inspect the held item slot first. If the correct stone appears there, confirm that the base Pokémon exactly matches the stone. Charizardite X and Charizardite Y are separate choices, as are Raichunite X and Raichunite Y.
Can Multiple Pokémon Hold Mega Stones
Yes. Several members of a six-Pokémon party can hold their matching stones at the same time. The one-per-battle rule applies to activation, not team building. Carrying multiple candidates can keep the opponent from knowing which Pokémon will transform until the Omni Ring is used.
The cost is item flexibility. Every Mega candidate gives up its normal held item, so loading the entire team with stones is rarely optimal. Select two plausible Mega users when uncertainty matters, or commit to one when the team depends on a specific transformation. Comparing the best Mega Evolutions can help identify which transformation deserves that single activation.
Are Mega Stones Consumed
No. Mega Stones are permanent items. Activating one uses the team’s Mega Evolution for that battle, but the item does not disappear, break, or require another purchase afterward. Leave it equipped to use the same transformation in later casual or ranked matches.
