Washers are available in different materials. While some are made of stainless steel or carbon steel, others are made of brass. Brass washers feature a distinct bronze-like color that’s not found in other common materials. They are characterized by a brass construction, meaning they are made of copper and zinc. Most forms of brass consist of about two-thirds copper and one-third zinc. The two metals are mixed together to form brass. When used to make washers, brass offers several benefits.
#1) Surface Protection
Brass washers can protect the parts with which you use them from surface damage. Brass is softer than steel. Why does this matter? If you tighten a bolt through a steel washer, the pressure may damage the underlying surface. Brass washers are less likely to cause surface damage. They are naturally soft, so they will deform slightly under pressure.
#2) Corrosion Resistance
Corrosion isn’t a concern with brass washers. Steel, particularly carbon steel, can succumb to rust and corrosion. When exposed to oxygen or moisture, the iron within steel will oxidize, resulting in the formation of iron oxide. Like steel, brass is an alloy. Brass, however, doesn’t contain any iron, so it can’t oxidize and produce rust. Brass washers can still tarnish over time, but this is generally a superficial issue and won’t affect their structural integrity or performance.
#3) Electrical Conductivity
Another benefit of brass washers is electrical conductivity. As previously mentioned, brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Copper is known for being an excellent conductor of electricity. Electricity can travel through copper with minimal resistance. This is why so many cables and wires feature a copper core. Brass washers exhibit similar characteristics. They are often used in fastening applications involving electrical components when conductivity is needed.
#4) Material Compatibility
A benefit of brass washers that often goes unnoticed is material compatibility. When two dissimilar metals are exposed to each other, galvanic corrosion may occur. Using washers made of an appropriate material can help to prevent this phenomenon. If an adjacent fastener or component is made of brass, using a brass washer can prevent galvanic corrosion.
#5) Aesthetics
Of course, many people prefer brass washers for their appearance. They feature a timeless bronze tone. For applications in which the washer will be hidden, you don’t have to worry about the appearance. But if you’re using a washer where it will be visible, you may want to choose brass for this reason.
