Can Burnout Cause Compensation Claims at Work?

A high-performing employee starts taking sick days, misses deadlines they would normally meet and becomes visibly exhausted in meetings. The question for an employer is not simply whether they are ‘burnt out’. It is whether work has contributed to a psychological injury, and whether the organisation has identified and managed the risks early enough. So, can burnout cause compensation claims? It can contribute to one, particularly where excessive workload, poor support, role conflict, bullying, traumatic exposure or unreasonable work demands have materially contributed to an employee’s injury.
