Author Razan Abdin on Celebrating Who We Are- plus a GIVEAWAY!

Welcome to my kidlit blog, Blissfully Bookish. This week, I’m delighted to a children’s author whose fiction explores meaningful themes of social-emotional learning. I don’t feature fiction too often, but I’m always happy to share a story that offers young readers an opportunity to connect, reflect, and grow. Please say hello to Razan Abdin, who is here to tell us about her new picture book, SPLENDIDLY SAWSAN, illustrated by Shahrzad Maydani, and published by Abrams.

Please describe the journey to publication and inspiration for this book.
The kernel of inspiration for what ultimately became Splendidly Sawsan came to me around 2020. After creating an outline, I spent about a year writing and revising this manuscript before sharing it with a couple trusted readers. My agent and I went on submission with it in early 2023 and received rejection after rejection after rejection.
When I finally heard back from an interested editor, it wasn’t an immediate yes. She offered a thoughtful Revise and Resubmit (or R & R in publishing terms). I used that editorial feedback to shape my story into a stronger piece. I got an offer in March 2024 and the book was published on September 1, 2026!
What message would you like the book to impart to children?
That they’re fabulous, just as they are. Especially since so many of us encounter messaging that tells us otherwise. I hope all children feel affirmed by this book.

“Sawsan returns to Dr. Salim’s office every Tuesday, week after week.
Sawsan explains that her feelings are like waves. Sometimes, they swell UP AND BURST!
Dr. Salim nods. “I see. Let’s create a strategy, you and me.”
They brainstorm tools for times when feelings feel big and bursty.”
What is your writing process and does it vary depending on the project?
It probably does vary depending on the project, to some extent. In general, I’m a plotter, instead of a panster. I usually create some sort of outline or story arc, but allow my characters to surprise me along the way too. Having that structure helps make the process of writing not feel as daunting to me. I usually go through a few drafts before sharing the manuscript with a few readers. I’ll use their feedback to complete one more revision pass before submitting it (to an agent or editor, for example).
The story celebrates Sawsan’s unique way of experiencing the world. How does SEL play a role in helping children understand and appreciate their own strength
In short, I think Social Emotional Learning helps children recognize and appreciate their own strengths (and the strengths of others!) by fostering self-awareness, social awareness, and encouraging empathy for all.
Please share your favorite books from the last 5 years that inspired you.
Oh, too many to name! But a few that immediately came to mind are: “A Map for Falasteen” written by Maysa Odeh and illustrated by Aliaa Betawi, which I think is a modern masterpiece. Anything written by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow, her writing is just plain pretty and incredibly precise (PS–if she’s ever teaching a class on craft, I highly recommend jumping on that opportunity!), and lastly, I’ll mention the picture book that most recently wowed me, “Baba Palooza” written by A.D. Ghani and illustrated by Nadia Alam–which is a beautifully executed love-letter to hardworking immigrant fathers–a subject near and dear to my heart.
What is the best piece of advice you would give to other writers?
Take time away from your work! As much as you reasonably can. Close your computer. Put the manuscript in a drawer and try your best to forget about it. Then, return to it with fresh eyes. I believe it’s beneficial to create some distance so it’s easier to identify and get rid of what’s not working.
And a bonus question just for kicks! What was your favorite book when you were a child?
“Number the Stars” written by Lois Lowry was the first book I remember that moved me to tears!

Splendidly Sawsan, which has received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal, is her debut book.
