19 Aug Green Living Magazine Once Again Recognizes d2e West for Sustainable Interior Design
Green Living Magazine follows the sustainability movement in Arizona. The Grand Canyon State is also the home of down2earth Interior Design West. Run by Stephanie Ebner, our long-time design consultant, d2e West shares the same focus on good design that endures, with a bit of a tweak given the different landscape and climate. Stephanie has always approached her work with a sustainable mindset, which is why it is no surprise that her talents have been recognized by Green Living Magazine for the second year in a row! Last year Stephanie was voted as Best Sustainable Interior Home Designer (link to blog post) and we could not have been prouder.

The current Home and Garden issue of Green Living features three nominees for this year’s award, and we’ve included excerpts from that article. You won’t want to miss Stephanie’s tips for responsible design, especially her easy to apply “Top 3”.

The bathroom shown in the article is a perfect example of applying core tenets of green design, such as responsible product sourcing and reuse of materials. Using what you have is a terrific first step toward eco-conscious design. In this case, Stephanie reused the bathroom vanity and sink bowls and paired them with secondhand hardware. The countertop is a remnant from a local countertop store, which reduces waste from two projects.
Another recent design of Stephanie’s, a guest bedroom, required quite a few new pieces, as the client only owned the bed. The approach was an emphasis on thoughtful and sustainable materials. Some examples of this effort are GREENGUARD Gold certified nightstands made from 100% upcycled wood and a side table made from ecothyline, a high grade material made of 100% post-consumer plastic waste. The best part? It can be recycled again! The bench is artisan made and fair trade certified and will stand the test of time because it is constructed of tzalam wood, which is known for its durability. The original artwork was painted on the beach on the west coast of Vancouver Island, and echoes the sentiment of respecting nature. Stephanie says, “It felt fitting for the client’s intention for the space and her mindset for the other updates she made to the house”. Even the rugs and accent pillow are made from ethically sourced natural fibers. Every element of a design provides the opportunity to make a difference.

Hopefully you’ve picked up some great suggestions and learned a bit about the ways you can design a new space that aligns with your sustainability goals. We wish Stephanie the best of luck as the votes are tallied, but one thing is for sure, she will always be Best of Arizona to us!
