It’s been a while since I wrote anything on the blog. Life has been busy, what with BeerEx Africa, the African Beer Cup and kicking off research for a new edition of Beer Safari.
For those of you who are new(ish) to the South African Beer scene, the first edition of Beer Safari was released in 2015. The book documented more than 80 breweries across the country, telling their stories and listing their beers.
The beer scene has changed a lot in ten years – some breweries have closed, many more have opened. And I’m thrilled to be able to say that I have a contract to write a new edition of the book, this time covering breweries around the continent, not just South Africa.
Beer Safari: A guide to the craft breweries of Africa will be published in 2027 by Penguin Random House. I kicked off the research earlier this year, visiting the breweries of the Eastern Cape and Garden Route. But a book like this comes with considerable research costs – flights, accommodation, car rental, spending hundreds of rands on national highway tolls… And while the publisher covers the costs to produce, print, market and distribute the book, the research costs, including photography, fall to the author,
