Autumn is one of the best times of year to change your fragrance because the scents we naturally gravitate towards start to change along with our wardrobes. As we move into knitwear, coats and darker evenings, those very light citrus and aquatic scents can suddenly feel less appealing and we start looking for something with a little more warmth and depth.
This year we’re seeing a much more grown-up approach to traditionally sweet notes.
Vanilla is still huge, but it’s being combined with amber, woods, leather and spice.
Fruit is getting darker too, with cherry, raspberry and berries replacing some of the brighter tropical notes we associate with summer.
You don’t necessarily need a very heavy perfume for autumn though. Some of the best transitional fragrances combine freshness at the top with warmer woods, musk or amber underneath, so they work particularly well through September and October.
