Kids’ Book Review: Review: Kev and Trev
We’ve been to the ocean and the jungle with them, and now we’re off in Book Three – Snot Cool Snow Stories, on another madcap adventure with Kev and Trev and their support crew, to the mountains in search of interesting animals called pugons.
We discover pugons are very shy, cute, small animals that are supposedly living up high on the snowy mountaintop and are a cross between a dragon and a pug. With only a very old book as a reference guide and a deadline from their ‘puglisher’, Kev and Trev are eager to find a way to make the pugons their characters for their next book.
As well as finding the pugons, their ultimate goal has not changed – one day they will be mega rich from writing stories based on their adventures and will finally be able to afford a new houseboat. Will they be third time lucky? Or will it be Mission Impossible!
The fabulous balance between the animated illustrations and simple text to support the story is why the Kev and Trev series is such a fabulous addition to any emerging reader’s library collection. The text is well spaced and the inclusion of dyslexic font in the short stories makes Kylie’s books highly accessible and enjoyable for all readers.
The relationship between Kev and Trev is a celebration in itself. Neurodivergent children will easily identify and hopefully see themselves in Trev especially, as it is evident that although he may struggle with the written word, he has wonderful abilities in other areas. Trev is highly creative with his illustrations, as well as being quite savvy in his survival skills. In fact, the funniest moments and fabulous play on words often come from some of Trev’s mistakes.
