Dubai’s Oud Metha Road project officially completed

Upgraded roads and intersections are expected to boost traffic flow for drivers around Za’abeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the completion of the Oud Metha Road and Al Asayel Street Development Project, which will further boost traffic flow in the area.

Different parts of the project have opened over the last few months, with the full project enhancing four major intersections, building four new bridges and two new tunnels, adding 4,300 metres in total, and adding 14 kilometres of roads.

For residents and commuters around Za’abeel Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha and Umm Hurair, the completion of the project will be welcome news, with traffic flow set to be boosted, road capacity increased, and journey time reduced.

“The project increases the capacity of Oud Maitha Street from 10,400 to 15,600 vehicles per hour in both directions, an increase of up to 50%, while reducing journey time from 20 minutes to five minutes, a 75% saving in time,” explained Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the RTA.

What the works have changed

A new lane to the left-turn ramp has been added at the intersection of Oud Metha Road and Sheikh Rashid Road, serving traffic from Oud Maitha Road onto Sheikh Rashid Road towards Al Garhoud Bridge. The number of right-turn lanes carrying traffic from Sheikh Rashid Road onto Oud Metha Road towards Dubai–Al Ain Road was increased from two to three. A tunnel was also constructed to connect the service road on Oud Maitha Road to the Sheikh Rashid Road intersection, serving traffic heading towards Bur Dubai.

Three new bridges have also been added: a two-lane bridge serving traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Al Wasl Club Street, a three-lane bridge serving traffic from Al Khail Road towards Al Asayel Street, and a two-lane bridge serving left-turn traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Oud Maitha Road.

At the intersection of Za’abeel Palace Street with Al Khail Road and Oud Maitha Road, a lane was added to the left-turn ramp serving traffic from Al Khail Road towards Dubai–Al Ain Road, doubling capacity. A single-lane tunnel, with a capacity of 1,200 vehicles per hour, was also constructed to serve traffic from Dubai–Al Ain Road towards the service road on Oud Maitha Road.
