In A Surprise Announcement, ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 5 Just Became The Series’ Last

It was a twist fans didn’t see coming: In a surprise announcement on Friday, Sept. 18, Netflix revealed that Season 5 would be the last hurrah for Sweet Magnolias.

It’s certainly not the news fans of the show were hoping to hear, since more than one storyline was left open at the end of the season. Guess we’ll need to pour out ~at least one~ emotional support margarita to reckon with where we left off. So what would prompt the streamer to abandon Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) so surreptitiously?

Here’s everything we know about Netflix’s decision to say goodbye to Serenity, plus a teensy bit of a silver lining.

Why did Netflix cancel Sweet Magnolias?

According to Deadline, the streamer held off on renewing to gauge viewership following the fifth season debut. While it experienced a soft decline (down 30% from premiere viewership the previous season), the numbers weren’t that bleak. And, as Deadline pointed out, the series is shot on a relatively modest budget, so that likely wasn’t the deciding factor.

What could have been, per the outlet, is a new series in the works… from none other than Sweet Magnolias’ showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson. More details on the show itself in a minute, but basically the word on the street is that it ultimately came down to greenlighting this new series or bringing the Magnolias back for one more season, and, well, you see how it shook out.

When did Season 5 of Sweet Magnolias premiere?

The fifth, and what we now know to be the final, season was released this summer: June 11. All 10 episodes are still available for streaming.

What’s this alleged new series about?

As we know, Anderson adapted Sweet Magnolias from the Sweet Magnolias book series by Sherryl Woods. Similarly, she’ll be (loosely) adapting the new drama, Ladies of the House, from Lauren Edmondson’s novel of the same name. And Anderson won’t be the only familiar face around set. Swisher is reportedly set to executive produce and may even star.

The official synopsis for the book teases: “Set in high-society Georgetown, an irresistible family drama about two sisters and the public scandal that just may lead them to rewrite the rules…”

So, much like Sweet Magnolias, the series will center on three women — the aforementioned adult sisters and their mother — trying to figure out life when their patriarch dies unexpectedly, inadvertently stirring up some drama on the way out.

So, where did we leave our Serenity girls?

I’m not gonna say Netflix really left us hanging, but I’m not NOT gonna say that either. I don’t think anyone would argue that Season 5 buttoned everything up.

Starting with Maddie and Cal (Justin Bruening), Season 4 saw Maddie chase her dream publishing job to New York City. Of course, she ended up returning to Serenity after being unceremoniously fired by her asshat boss, only to find new success back home.

Cal gets offered what could be his dream job managing a new baseball team, but his partner in the venture is potentially problematic. Guess we’ll never see if Javi (Evan Cleaver) really is a changed man!

Then there’s the loose end of Common Language. As Season 5 ends, we see our Magnolia trio planning for their next joint business venture: Common Language. The shared space would have been anchored by Maddie’s bookshop, Dana Sue’s teaching kitchen, and Helen’s art market.

On the romance front, Helen did get her happy ending when she and Erik (Dion Johnstone) married in the season finale. They also decided to foster teens together. Hooray for Helen!

Dana Sue, on the other hand, didn’t end the season (and apparently now the series) on a romantic high note. After Ronnie’s (Brandon Quinn) involvement in an e-bike venture ended in a house fire largely caused by his negligence, the two find their marriage in a tough spot. An old rival and new business associate, Clark, even starts to fill the emotional void in Dana Sue’s life. Ultimately, she ends the season realizing she needs to step away from her marriage to see if it is salvageable.

We also see the daughters of Serenity, aka the Mini Magnolias, graduate and get ready to go off to college. But alas, we’ll get no closure on Tyannie (the “ship” name given to Maddie’s oldest son, Ty, and Dana Sue’s daughter Annie). Season 5 never saw Ty come home to continue his budding relationship with Annie, and she manages to find two new flames to move on with.

Hey, maybe Hallmark will pick up the series for one final round of margs. Who knows?
