Ringworm and Fungal Infections: A Common Misconception

Despite the name, ringworm has nothing to do with worms. It’s a superficial fungal infection that produces a ring-shaped, red, scaly patch with a clearer center. It spreads through direct contact with an infected person, animal, or surface, and it responds well to antifungal treatment once correctly identified.

Fungal infections frequently get mistaken for eczema or psoriasis, which is one reason self-treating an undiagnosed rash doesn’t always work. Applying a topical steroid to a fungal infection can actually worsen it.

Hives: Usually Temporary, Sometimes Persistent

Hives appear as raised, red or skin-colored welts that shift location, come and go within hours, and itch intensely. They develop when the body releases histamine in response to a trigger, which might be a viral infection, food, medication, or, in many cases, nothing identifiable at all. 

Most acute hives resolve within a few days. Over-the-counter antihistamines like cetirizine, loratadine, or fexofenadine may bring relief while awaiting resolution. Chronic hives, defined as episodes lasting more than six weeks, warrant a dermatology evaluation to investigate underlying causes. 

When Should You See a Dermatologist?

Some itchy patches resolve with basic moisturizing and a little time. Others need professional attention. See a dermatologist if:

• The rash persists beyond two to three weeks without improvement
• Over-the-counter treatments haven’t helped, or symptoms have worsened
• The rash spreads, blisters, or develops crusting
• You experience significant discomfort that disrupts sleep or daily activities
• The cause isn’t clear, and you’ve tried multiple products without success
• A rash keeps returning in the same location
