A Weekend Full of Surprises
Grab a coffee and let’s talk about Shoulder Dance. This is one of those movies that feels a lot like watching a play unfold in a living room. The setup is pretty simple. Ira and his boyfriend Josh are having a normal weekend until Ira’s childhood friend Roger unexpectedly drops by with his girlfriend Lily. What starts as a simple catch-up quickly turns into a messy situation fueled by alcohol, drugs, and a whole lot of unspoken history.
The Folks on Screen
The cast actually carries this film quite well. Matt Dallas plays Ira, the guy who is terrified of commitment and clearly still holding onto some childhood baggage. He does a good job showing that internal panic. Rick Cosnett is Roger, the straight friend who might not be as completely straight as he seems, and he brings a really easygoing but confusing energy to the room.
Taylor Frey as Josh is probably the voice of reason here, trying to navigate his boyfriend’s sudden weird behavior. And Maggie Geha as Lily is just a lot of fun. She comes in like a whirlwind, offering everyone molly and trying to force a party atmosphere. The chemistry between the four of them is engaging, even if the situations they put themselves in feel a bit manufactured at times.
The Vibe of the House
The whole movie basically takes place inside a fancy house, giving it a very enclosed, almost claustrophobic feel. As the night goes on and the characters get more intoxicated, the conversations get deeper and the boundaries get super blurry. It is heavy on dialogue and light on fast action, so you really have to be in the mood to just sit and listen to people talk out their issues.
It can definitely feel a bit Hollywood in how it handles things like the drug use, where everyone just sleeps it off without a care in the world. But if you like movies that lock a bunch of messy characters in a room to see what happens, it is an easy watch with some solid acting.
