Dakota Johnson Admitted She Grew Her Pubic Hair for the First Fifty Shades Film Rather Than Eat a Hot Ones Wing

In an October 5 Hot Ones Versus teaser, Dakota Johnson answered a question about filming the first Fifty Shades movie rather than eat a death wing. “I grew my pubic hair,” she said of playing Anastasia Steele. “For 50 Shades, the first one, I was both frontal and she was supposed to have never had a wax.”

“There’s no way I’m going to eat one of these,” Johnson said. First We Feast’s teaser caption gives the longer ending as “one of these f*ckers.”

Her account sits alongside earlier descriptions of the film’s production. In 2015, Johnson said she “had more waxing than any woman should have.” Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey said she wore a patch and pubic hair was added in post, while director Sam Taylor-Johnson described a “pubic hair arc” written to track the book. Those accounts don’t establish precisely how Johnson prepared for the role.

Anne Hathaway referees the Versus matchup between Johnson and Josh Hartnett: contestants answer questions or eat wings, and whoever eats the most loses. The teaser appeared a day after Johnson turned 37, with the full episode scheduled for October 6 on First We Feast’s YouTube channel.

The three are promoting Verity, the Colleen Hoover adaptation that opened in US theaters October 2. Johnson plays struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, Hathaway plays bestselling author Verity Crawford, and Hartnett plays Crawford’s husband. Johnson had already completed a full Hot Ones interview with Sean Evans in June 2025 while promoting Materialists; Versus uses a different format. At the end of that earlier interview, she told Evans, “I won’t be back.”
