This mattress was gifted by Simba in exchange for this post. All thoughts are my own.
When you travel with young children, everyone talks about packing lists.
Snacks. White noise machines. The right pram. The perfect sling.
But no one really talks about the thing that actually makes the biggest difference to how a trip feels.
Sleep.
Not just the children’s sleep. Ours.
Because when you are running on broken nights, early wake-ups and naps on the go in car seats, prams and slings, everything feels harder than it needs to.
After a few recent trips where we came home more tired than when we left, it made me realise how much proper rest matters, especially for parents.

Travel Sleep Is Never Quite the Same
On travel days, naps happen wherever they can.
In the car.
In the pram while walking around a new town.
In the sling while exploring somewhere beautiful.
Or sometimes not at all.
Bedtimes are earlier than usual because everyone is shattered.
If we are in a hotel room, we are all in one space. That means every cough wakes someone. Every toss and turn is heard. One child wriggling at 5am means we are all awake.
We often prefer Airbnb-style accommodation when travelling because we can have separate rooms, put the baby down in the lounge, and actually decompress in the evening. But no matter where we stay, sleep is never quite as good as it is at home.
And that is why home sleep matters so much.

Why Parent Sleep Is the Foundation of a Good Trip
If I have not slept well:
I am less patient on long drives.
Carrying a toddler around a zoo or up to a viewpoint feels harder.
I feel more overwhelmed by small things.
Back and hip ache creep in quickly.
With two children, early mornings are a given. So quality of sleep matters just as much as quantity.
Recently we upgraded to a Super King Hybrid mattress from Simba and it has genuinely made more difference than I expected.
Medium to Firm Support That Has Helped My Back
The mattress is medium to firm. I was slightly unsure at first because our previous mattress had traditional springs and felt softer.
But the firmer support has actually been really good for my back ache, especially after carrying babies, long car journeys and the general physical side of parenting.
Instead of sinking in, it feels supportive around my hips and lower back, which is exactly where I tend to feel discomfort. After busy days out, that extra support helps me feel more rested the next morning.
Less Movement, Fewer Wake-Ups
Our previous mattress had springs and if you are a light sleeper you will understand how much movement transfers across the bed.
Every time my husband rolled over in the night, I felt it and would often wake properly.
With this hybrid design, I notice his movement far less. It feels more stable and contained.
I have been tracking my sleep on my Apple Watch and there are noticeably fewer wake-ups compared to when we had our previous mattress. I am still waking occasionally because of the children, but I am not being disturbed by my husband rolling over in the night in the same way.
When sleep is already interrupted because of children, reducing those extra wake-ups makes a real difference.
The Super King Space Works Well for Family Life
We have always had a Super King, so we knew we wanted to stick with that size.
Morning cuddles.
One child climbing in during the night.
Reading bedtime stories all together.
There is enough space for all of us without feeling cramped, which definitely helps everyone settle more easily.

Why Good Sleep Makes Travel Better
Here is what I have noticed.
When I have slept properly, I enjoy the day more. I have more patience. I do not dread the drive. I cope better with unpredictable naps. I feel more present.
Travel with young children will always be slightly chaotic. Naps will happen in car seats. Bedtimes will be early. Someone will wake before 6am.
But if you are starting from a well-rested place, it feels manageable instead of overwhelming.
For us, improving our home sleep set-up has made our travel life easier because we are recovering better between trips and starting the next one with more energy.

Sleep is not glamorous and it is not a packing hack. But as a parent of two who loves days out and exploring, it might be one of the most important investments we have made.
Because when parents sleep better, the whole family travels better.
