Forever the Forest Sings is a new collection of solo piano pieces by Finnish-Swedish pianist and composer Julia Andersson inspired by the forests of her homeland and the seasonal changes and emotional landscapes they reflect. Written and recorded at home over the course of what she considers a transformative year, the songs are meant to represent moments of reflection–”like wandering through a forest where every trail holds a different story, yet each one leads inward”.
A certain quietude and affecting melancholy permeate the music and in the listening one feels a grounded sense of stillness. As she demonstrated on her previous album Dröm (2023), Andersson is an expressive composer and performer, and she is at her spellbinding best here aging. The heart of the new album, we are told, is about “finding refuge amid life’s constant changes” and “an invitation to pause, to listen, and to remember there is always a place of grounding” and that is a welcome invitation indeed.
Prior to the release of Forever the Forest Sings later this month, take a moment to enjoy this beautifully shot video of Julia performing the albums third single entitled “Blank Slate” in which she gently evokes the contrasting and sometimes complex emotions experienced that come with new directions and life changes.
“Blank Slate” is about new beginnings and choosing a different direction when life doesn’t unfold as expected. I often find myself on a roller coaster between uncertainty and optimism, despair and hope. That shaky feeling of standing at the precipice of something unknown, not knowing what the future holds…
