JJ Gabriel future at Manchester United remains uncertain

Manchester United included JJ Gabriel in their official 2026-27 team photo, but BBC Sport reported on 5 October that there is still no hint of reconciliation between the club and the teenage forward. The image is a public record of United’s squad representation, not evidence that the dispute over his future or registration has been resolved. Gabriel turns 16 on Tuesday 6 October.

The distinction matters: the photographs were taken on 8 September, two days before Gabriel played his final game for United and informed the club of his intention to leave. His appearance in a team picture cannot settle what happens next.

The uncertainty has been developing for months, and United’s response to Gabriel’s departure remains a central part of the story.

A photograph does not resolve the stand-off

The photographs were released on Monday 5 October. United still hold Gabriel’s registration, while sources close to Old Trafford told BBC Sport that the club had made multiple attempts to reconcile the situation as part of its duty of care to the teenager. Those efforts have so far failed.

BBC Sport described it as virtually certain that Gabriel’s next involvement in a United game will come as an opponent. Real Madrid and Barcelona are among the European clubs taking an interest, and his EU passport is thought to make a move to the continent easier.

The earlier exit request and reported interest from European clubs explain why a place in the photograph should not be mistaken for a change of heart on either side.

United’s view and the player’s side remain apart

United regard Gabriel’s inclusion in the senior team photo as further evidence of their commitment to his development and transition towards first-team football. The club also says it provided first-team care and services, including regular meetings with senior coaches and nutritionists, and lobbied for him to use the name JJ Gabriel on his shirt.

That is the club’s account, not a shared conclusion: BBC Sport reports that those close to Gabriel see the handling of his future differently. United gave him the number 77 shirt for the 2026-27 season, but a squad number and a place in an official image do not amount to a sporting agreement.

The club would consider legal action if evidence emerged of an illegal inducement by a club or agent in breach of regulations concerning young players. BBC Sport did not report that such evidence had been established, and the possibility should not be confused with an action already taken.

The events behind Gabriel’s decision

According to sources cited by BBC Sport, the tensions had been simmering for months, with Gabriel’s decision to seek a move ultimately triggered by his omission from Michael Carrick’s side for the Champions League match against Sabah FK on 10 September. Gabriel’s camp had wanted him to feature as a substitute, while United officials had indicated that a substitute appearance against Brighton in the EFL Cup was planned.

Gabriel was not eligible for the Sabah match because he had not been registered on United’s UEFA A list when it was announced on 3 September; the precise reason was not made clear. Earlier on 10 September, he scored a hat-trick against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League at Leigh Sports Village.

His rise had made the disagreement more conspicuous. Gabriel made his senior United debut in a friendly against Atletico Madrid on 1 August, playing the final eight minutes, and finished the 2025-26 campaign as both the Premier League Under-18 player of the year and United’s Under-18 player of the year.

His absence from the United Under-21 squad during the dispute was another sign that his situation had moved beyond a routine academy selection issue.

A decision is still weeks away

Gabriel is now in Spain, working full-time with coach Jack Hunter, and BBC Sport says a final decision on his future is not expected for a few weeks. United are watching the situation closely, but the team photo offers no answer on whether reconciliation remains possible or where Gabriel will play next.

For United, the immediate questions are whether the relationship can be repaired and whether the registration dispute develops further. Any question of an inducement remains conditional; the BBC report establishes no wrongdoing, and no destination has been confirmed.
