New Cash Record: ATM Withdrawals Hit Record ₹2.24 Lakh Crore, Cash Figures Reach ₹43 Lakh Crore

The pace of cash withdrawals from ATMs has again increased. The amount withdrawn in June this year stands at ₹2.18 Lakh Crore, while the amount of cash withdrawal would be ₹2.24 Lakh Crore in August 2026. Additionally, there has been an increase in the amount of cash circulation in the country, which has gone up to ₹43 Lakh Crore.

As per the report of CBI Research, both cash withdrawals from banks and ATMs are on an upward trajectory. In the period of April-August 2026, the average cash withdrawal from banks is about ₹7.3 Lakh Crore, whereas in the financial year 2025-26, it stood at ₹7.8 Lakh Crore. Despite a decrease in ATM cash withdrawal for some time, there has been an increase in the past three months.

The amount of cash withdrawal from ATMs has gone up to ₹2.24 lakh crore in August 2026, as compared to ₹2.18 lakh crore in June 2026. In June 2026, the amount withdrawn was ₹2.18 lakh crore, but it has risen to ₹2.19 lakh crore in July and ₹2.24 lakh crore in August. Likewise, cash withdrawal from bank branches is also quite stable at about ₹5-₹6 lakh crore.

Approximately ₹4 lakh crore in excess cash is in circulation in the system. One reason for this is the RBI rule issued in April 2025, which mandated that 90% of ATMs dispense small denomination notes like ₹100 and ₹200. Consequently, ATM withdrawals of ₹100 and ₹200 notes are also increasing.
