My review and thoughts on Honey’s Helpful Hints

Aw, this is such a lovely picture book which can help teach kids how to be more green.  Honey is a labrador dog whose family has nicknamed her ‘Dustbin Dog’ because she likes to eat any food that’s been wasted.  Honey isn’t just rummaging through the trash for fun though, she’s trying not to waste food, as well as teach her family different ways be more environmental along with her neighbour poodle Jimmy.  How many things can Honey help to make her family more green?  This picture book is filled with lovely illustrations and text.

The book begins by introducing Honey as a fun loving labrador who loves to not waste things like water and food.  As we learn more about Honey though we discover through her story with her family the different ways we can all be more green such as turning the thermostat down and recycling.  The text has some lovely rhyming to it and I do like the way certain dog behaviours like eating out of the bin are reinvented with an environmental twist, showing kids some real and easy ways they can help the environment and be more green through simple actions.

The illustrations are all so fun and colourful.  I love the way Honey looks as well as how fun the pictures look among some of the text on certain pages.  Every page is clear to see and I do like how cute Honey and Jimmy look.  The book has a good ending though if I’m honest I would have liked an additional page with a summary of tips or some extra ones to reinforce the green message for kids reading.  But overall a lovely picture book and a fun way to introduce being environmental to children.
