Meanjin/Brisbane, we can’t wait to meet you.
On Sunday 29 November, LOUD WOMEN Fest Australia lands at The Brightside for the final stop of our three-city Australian run, with 12 bands bringing feminist punk, riot grrrl, post-punk, doom, alt-rock and assorted excellent noise from across Australia and the UK.
And this one has been built with people who actually live and breathe the local scene.
Helping us make the Meanjin Fest happen are Riley Doherty of Vipersnatch and Georgia Zemanek-Woodrow of Whoroboros, bringing local knowledge, local connections and plenty of DIY energy to the whole thing.
The lineup
Anna & the Morphics + Dirty Linen + I, Doris + IRKED + Lavender Threat + Sage + Second Idol + smallways. + The Maggie Pills + Vipersnatch + Whoroboros + Whose Party
There’s plenty of Meanjin in the room. Anna & the Morphics bring gender-diverse femme-punk drawing on punk, post-punk, new wave, goth and riot grrrl; Dirty Linen turn sapphic love, despair and feminine rage into alternative punk; and two-piece Lavender Threat make what they very accurately describe as “dyke doom”.
Then there’s Whoroboros, serving up Meanjin riot grrrl and feminist propaganda, and Whose Party, whose grungy guitars and bright melodies move between atmospheric vulnerability and big, noisy hooks.
Coming in from elsewhere in Australia are Gadigal/Sydney punk-art duo smallways., Naarm trans punk artist Sage, Gadigal/Wangal alt-rockers Second Idol, and Naarm six-piece The Maggie Pills. Vipersnatch are heading down from Darumbal Land/Rockhampton with their uncompromising feminist punk, while the UK contingent comes in the form of North East punks IRKED and London menopunks I, Doris.
In other words: arrive early.
Built with the local scene
Taking LOUD WOMEN around the world was never supposed to mean parachuting into a city, putting our logo on a poster and disappearing again.
For each Australian Fest, we’ve worked with people who are part of the scene on the ground. In Meanjin, that means Riley from Vipersnatch and Georgia from Whoroboros, who have helped us shape a bill rooted in the community they’re part of every day.
That’s the bit we’re most excited about: bands and scenes connecting across cities and countries, audiences finding new favourites, and LOUD WOMEN becoming something each city can make its own.
