The kick has almost nothing underneath it. DØMINA built the punch out of click and saturation instead of sub weight, so it never lands in your chest the way a big-room techno kick does. It goes for your ears instead.
Everything sits high. The hats stay wide open and the mid-range runs hot enough to fray, which is why the track reads loud even with the volume down. On a real system you feel the missing bottom as a decision. On laptop speakers it is the reason the thing still works.
The arrangement is where it earns something. Twice the kick disappears completely and the track keeps moving on hats and a smear of noise, and both times the gap runs a beat longer than is comfortable. Then it comes back. Withholding the return is the oldest trick in this music, and it still works, because the silence makes you notice how hard you were being pushed a second earlier.
Mutate Records put it out as a single and nothing more, three minutes and change, which is the honest length for an idea this single-minded. Six would have been greed.
I came up through melodic rooms, so a record this stripped of melody should not hold me. This one does, on momentum and two well-placed holes in the floor. I want to hear what DØMINA does with a longer runway.
