Spiritual confusion doesn’t begin when we are adults asking questions, it is built up by the world from when we are children. We don’t just find ourselves confused; we are driven on a journey of confusion until it’s in full effect and we are aware of it.
Most will remain in this spiritual confusion as unbelievers because of the devil blinding them from truth (2 Corinthians 4:4). And some will find the light through the grace of God. Those who are left in darkness are left to be in the world that they love, and those who are rescued by grace will be taught to love God.
There is no injustice from God. Because He told mankind that it would surely die (Genesis 2:17) if it chose to live with the two options of good and evil. And because He has rescued us, though this body is dead because of sin (—rejecting God’s perfect, paradise will for us), we are spiritually (eternally) alive in the Spirit of God, if ever we are in Christ.
Adam and Eve represented all of mankind because they were all of mankind. None of us could have had the ability to do anything better. We all know better now because it is done, and we are living in the results of humankind’s decision.
Evidently, none of us would have been mature enough to see past the schemes of the devil, because we were like babies. But never is this God’s fault because He warned us, and if we weren’t immature babies, then we would have been mature will-less slaves of God without choice.
Remember, dear brethren, this is a Holy God we are made by. No darkness can be found in Him (1 John 1:5), so far was it from Him to create mindless slaves. And so knowing the fall would inevitably come, He continued with creation anyway, but even then Christ was there for us from the beginning, willing and ready.
“who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,” – 2 Timothy 1:9 KJV
So it is mankind who chose sin, and chose death, even those who will be in eternal death. It is never God’s fault, not for a second. For, we could not have been any higher beings than what Adam and Eve were, for they were the first.
Why Do I Feel Confused Spiritually?
“For God is not a God of confusion but of peace…” – 1 Corinthians 14:33
Feeling spiritually confused is a spiritual attack from spiritual dark forces. As the Lord God tells us He is not the author of confusion, we understand that it is the devil and his kingdom of darkness that propel spiritual confusion.
Spiritual confusion is being engaged in the worldly doctrines that make up the world. Doctrines that come against God, whether in stealth or being abruptly against God’s Word.
If as Christians, we find ourselves confused all of a sudden, this didn’t start that day: it started weeks back, months back, or even years back. It started when worldly, demonic, and unspiritual wisdom was informing us, unbeknownst to us.
When spiritual confusion doesn’t disappear in a day, do not fret: we must untangle its web from the root where it began.
What Causes Spiritual Confusion?
- No inner life work of the Spirit
- Not meditating on the Word of God
Worldliness is living life based solely on the physical, never considering the spiritual. Worldliness occupies us so much so that we become distant from God and by the time we realise it, we are spiritually confused because we’ve been consuming spiritual lies.
God is a Spirit, and if we live based on what is physical (worldly) only, then we have completely neglected God. We live by faith not because it is a random command, but because God is a Spirit, we cannot physically see Him. And so we cannot have our relationship with God dependent on what we can see when we won’t physically see Him, yet.
Though God is very present and visible, like we can see the effects of the wind tossing trees to and fro, we see God with our faith not our physical eyes.
And so worldliness is seeing only with our eyes because the world is physical, and this is orchestrated by spiritual dark forces behind the physical world that know very well the importance of living by faith. This is why the world lives to overwhelm our senses, so we can be overcome through our senses.
Worldliness is the habitation of spiritual confusion.
No Inner Life Work of the Spirit
Without an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit, we are not equipped to fight against spiritual dark forces because we do not have the full armour of God on.
Unless we are clothed in the full armour of God (Ephesians 6:10-18), we cannot win, nor can we see the schemes of the devil and his fiery darts that he tries to kill us with, destroy us with, and steal from us with.
The inner work of the Holy Spirit is what trains us to be doers of the Word of God. It is what enables us to manifest the Holy Spirit within us through His fruit and His Spirit of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, might, fear of the Lord, and Spirit of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2).
Not Meditating on the Word of God
Knowing God is knowing His Word because God is His Word. Without the knowledge of God, how can we obey His voice if we do not know it? How can we be led by His Spirit as that is the only way we are children of God? (Romans 8:14). And how will we not quench and grieve the Spirit of God within us?
“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” – Hebrews 11:6 ESV
If spiritual confusion causes us to lose faith in God, and we subsequently do not draw near to Him but find lower (inactive, dead) means of spiritual satisfaction, then we cannot please God and we cannot be rewarded with the life He wants for us.
Not meditating on the Word of God is the only way to stay in spiritual confusion, for, the Word is the only light and life, without it, there is only darkness and (eternal) death.
How Confusion Affects Your Faith
Spiritual confusion can affect our faith by leaving us vulnerable to being overcome by the darkness that has brought confusion forth into our lives.
We cannot take these attacks lightly, dear brethren. On paper or on screen, it seems like just words: ‘spiritual confusion’. But in us, the spiritual beings, it is an attack that can lead to eternal spiritual death if not addressed and conquered.
Why Confusion Happens Even When You’re Seeking God
The Word of God in the Bible seems like just words like all other words in all other books or forms of writing. And to a certain degree, it is so, because the Word of God is not meant to stay on paper, it is meant to live in our hearts, minds, souls, and human spirits, unlike all other forms of writing.
How will we be led by the Word if it is merely on paper and not in us? For, we are not paper but beings that live and breathe. The Word of God is alive and active because when it is within us, we can never remain unchanged. Just as faith without works is dead, if the Word of God doesn’t live in us, we make it inactive in our lives.
Not that the Word of God is ever dead, but rather that it is we who remain dead to the Word of God as we have not been brought to life by its Truth, its Way, and its Life. Because only Christ who is the manifested Word of God is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6).
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12
How to Overcome Spiritual Confusion
Spiritual confusion is overcome by spiritual light. What is not known, seen, or understood is so because it is in the dark.
Knowledge, wisdom, and understanding are spiritual light and they come from only God Almighty because “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows”. – James 1:17
There is therefore no good in this world. Whatever we seek, if we seek it out from the world, it will do us no good but harm only. And if it is good and from heaven, then we have realised it in our lives through the Word of God and His Holy Spirit in our midst.
