Aston Villa boss aims to stay in form and even improve his team after the lengthy international break.
Aston Villa and other clubs in Europe are forced to come up with additional agenda following the lengthy three-week international break. It is the first time in history to reduce the concern of players’ wellness from frequent long flight for the foreign ones.
Villa have already had two games on schedule during the break, a game behind closed doors against Southampton last week and this weekend versus Sevilla in Antonio Puerta trophy match. During the interview with VillaTV as reported in avfc.co.uk, Unai Emery shares the reason for it.
“The players with the national team are working with their teams, but we must continue working here ourselves, trying to get stronger for the next challenges we will face.”
The Detailed Plan
Emery shared his detailed plan so far and his target.
To have this break, working one week in Birmingham and the second week here in Spain, trying to keep our routine working because we need to keep the rhythm we achieved before the break and the good results we achieved.
“The players were working last week in Birmingham and in Spain, it’s really fantastic how they are responding every day to keep the same mentality we were working with to prepare the next match against Brentford and then Champions League.
“It’s important to play against Sevilla because we want to keep our good form we had before the break, keeping the same mentality as last week when we were playing against Southampton.Playing in the Antonio Puerta match is important for this cause.”
Villa’s form after international breaks last season
International break appears to have positive impact on Villa, at least from the last season’s experience. Prior to the first international break, which was in the first week of September, Villa had negative trends too like this season. They were winless in the first three games, one draw and two defeats.
After the first international break in 2025/26, Villa did have improvement, though slowly. They picked up their first win in Europa League on September 25. Then, three days later, The Clarets and Blue secured their first win in the Premier League.
Then, after second international break in early October, Villa’s form did get stronger too. John McGinn and Co clinched 10 wins out of 12 games in the Premier League until the New Year. Meanwhile, in Europa League, Emery’s side secured five triumphs in six games in the league phase.
So, international break does have its own advantage and Emery seems to know already how to boost his team. Once again, Villa is in good hands. Let’s hope they can win another title, perhaps FA Cup this time, something they have not lifted since 1957! It seems more doable than winning Premier League or Champions league this time. In Emery we trust!
