The defending champions, India, will relive one of the most intense rivalries in the world of international hockey when they take on their arch-rivals, Pakistan, in the Asian Games men’s hockey semi-final on Thursday. They will also be aiming to secure direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The Asian Games gold medalist team will get direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and India surely would not want to miss that chance.
India, who had finished a disappointing seventh place in the World Cup earlier this year, have been unbeaten so far in the Asian Games. The team has won all five of their matches to clinch the top spot in Pool A. India started their tournament with an impressive 13-1 victory against Indonesia before following that up with another dominant 16-1 win against Sri Lanka. India managed to defeat South Korea 8-2 before beating the host nation Japan 2-0 in their toughest game in the pool phase. India concluded the group stage with a resounding 10-0 victory over Bangladesh.
India has performed effectively throughout the tournament, and its attacking line has found its groove at the right time. Forward Dilpreet Singh is tied for second with nine goals. His fellow forwards Abhishek and captain Harmanpreet Singh have eight goals each. Harmanpreet’s drag-flicks from penalty corners have consistently been a major asset for India. India will be without the services of midfielder Raj Kumar Pal. He has been ruled out of the tournament after fracturing his left thumb in the team’s last pool match. Reserve player Nilakanta Sharma has been included in the team.
Pakistan, on the other hand, was on track to top Pool B, but a narrow 4-5 defeat against Malaysia pushed them to second place, setting the stage for Thursday’s highly anticipated match. In their other pool matches, Pakistan defeated Thailand 9-0, Uzbekistan 5-1, China 3-0, and Oman 7-2.
