“We’re Only Trying To Help Nigerians” – Oyedele’s Reacts To Claims Tinubu Is Using 30-Day Fuel Discount To Win Votes

  • Minister of Finance Taiwo Oyedele has dismissed claims that the Federal Government introduced its 30-day petrol discount to influence Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.
  • His defence has drawn criticism on X, with users questioning the timing and impact of the temporary relief amid high fuel prices.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu’s administration introduced its 30-day fuel discount to secure votes ahead of the 2027 elections.

Oyedele defended the initiative during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, insisting that the government was trying to provide relief to Nigerians rather than use the measure to influence their votes.

“We are not that dumb to give Nigerians a discount for one month so that they can vote for us in January. We are only trying to help Nigerians,” he said.

The Federal Government announced that NNPC Retail would offer petrol at a reduced price for 30 days as part of efforts to ease the pressure of rising fuel costs. However, the decision has attracted criticism from opposition figures and other Nigerians who argue that the temporary measure offers limited relief.

Reacting to Oyedele’s comments, several X users questioned why the government was introducing the discount at this time, while others complained that the reduction was too small compared with the increase in petrol prices.

Some accused the administration of attempting to win public support before the elections, while others criticised the minister and the government’s economic policies.
