Choosing to study abroad in Florence, Italy, was something I knew would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I wanted the opportunity to step outside of my normal routine, experience a different culture, and become more independent. Before leaving, I had to consider things like the cost of the program, being away from my family and friends, and making sure studying abroad fit into my college schedule.
Preparing for Florence was both exciting and stressful. Physically, I spent a lot of time packing clothes, comfortable shoes, toiletries, school supplies, and everything else I thought I might need. Mentally and emotionally, I tried to prepare myself for being far away from home and adjusting to a completely different environment. Along with everything in my suitcase, I brought an open mind, curiosity, and a willingness to try new things.
Before leaving, I felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness. I was excited to finally see Florence and experience life in Italy, but I was also nervous about navigating a new city and being so far from the people I am used to seeing every day. During my first week, those nerves have slowly started turning into excitement as Florence begins to feel more familiar.
My biggest goal while abroad is to fully experience Italian culture rather than simply feel like a tourist. I want to try new foods, learn about Florence’s history, meet new people, travel to other parts of Italy and Europe, and become more confident and independent. After just one week, I can already tell this experience is going to challenge me, teach me a lot about myself, and give me memories I will carry long after I return home.
