A Bigger Commitment to Craft

Brand movement is nothing new in beer distribution. Breweries change partners, portfolios change hands, and distributors adjust their focus. River Barrel and Odom worked together on the latest transition with the goal of putting the four breweries in a position to succeed over the long term.

For River Barrel, the fit is straightforward. The company has built its business around craft beer and maintains a strong presence in the independent bottle shops, bars, restaurants, grocery stores, and specialty accounts where these brands have long been relevant.

Left Hand and Anderson Valley bring decades of brewing history and established followings in Washington. Occidental and Steeplejack add two highly regarded Oregon breweries with a natural fit in River Barrel’s Pacific Northwest-focused portfolio.

They also join a growing list of recent additions. Over the past year, River Barrel has brought on Bierly Brewing, Jellyfish Brewing, Slightly Furry, and Schönramer, while continuing to build its specialty import, cider, and non-alcoholic business.

The common thread isn’t simply adding more brands. It’s finding producers that fit the way River Barrel sells beer.

“Our goal has never been to carry the most brands,” Cohen said. “It’s to represent the right brands. We want every supplier in our portfolio to receive meaningful attention and every retailer to know they’re working with a team that genuinely believes in the products we sell.”

Staying Close to the Market

River Barrel operates from Kent and serves retailers throughout Western Washington. Its sales team works directly with neighborhood bottle shops, restaurants and bars, grocery retailers, and specialty beverage accounts across the region. That local presence matters. It gives the company direct feedback from buyers, helps the team identify opportunities quickly, and allows sales reps to spend time actually selling and educating accounts on the brands they represent.

River Barrel has also invested in making the nuts and bolts of distribution easier for customers. Its Fresh Sheet provides current inventory and pricing, while online ordering gives retailers more ways to place orders and keep up with new releases.

What’s Next
