Everyone says “be grateful” or “be grateful for what you have” – I know it’s been over said. But, to me, there’s a difference between occasional gratefulness because I feel I should be and practicing gratitude daily. And, the benefits of the second one are so significant that I had to share this with you.

You see, in my own life of hardships and traumas, I was one of those people that thought “okay, yes, I should be grateful, at least I have food to eat, I mean some people don’t even have that”. Ever been there?

And, it’s hard to tell someone in hardship or who’s been through traumatic experiences to just “be grateful”. So, no matter what your situation is right now, I’m not going to say that to you. I’m instead saying, practice gratefulness.

And, why? Because I’ve seen the wonderful, amazing benefits of it in my own life. And, no, not just to manifest something, but for lasting change in how I feel and how I approach life.

The other thing that changed my life was becoming more empowered, so I made this set of empowerment workbooks for you!

Practicing Gratitude Daily Can Lead to a Better Life

I went through so much loss and trauma that for a time, I couldn’t see much to be grateful for, much less how I would keep going. And, I only share this because somewhere out there, someone is going through the same things. If so, I promise you, it gets better and easier. Just take it one moment and one day at a time.

But, eventually I guess you could say that I got to a place of contemplation. I was pretty much alone in a new place and I had a baby, so I would take him on long strolls in parks (was Florida – so beautiful!) – and I would think as I walked. Not heavy thinking, more like a gentle conversation between me and God or my higher self and a broad look at my life and how I felt about things.

And, at some point during this, I began to notice the true beauty that surrounded me, and I thought sure this is beautiful but the environment I came from probably had so much beauty that I never even noticed much or appreciated it.

I’ve also put together 31 Daily Inspiration Quotes (one for each day of the month) that can help you feel more inspired each day!

It sounds so simple, you’d think that everyone notices and appreciates the way the trees move with the wind and the sound it makes and how wonderful it is – and much more. But, I don’t think everyone does.

I think we are so busy living and surviving and planning that it often escapes us. So, I’m here to remind you not to let it escape you.

There’s plenty that is hard in life and to want to avoid, but there’s always the other side of the coin too. And, why not balance it out? Start trying to notice things around you that you can appreciate, start practicing gratitude daily, and you will see that it softens life.

Here are several ways that practicing gratitude daily will improve your life:

1. You’ll be able to focus on something better

“There are reasons to be a little down or grumpy. Now, I’m sitting on my front porch, watching a cute bird hop around. I felt it relax me. I smiled.” -alb

One benefit to practicing gratitude and positivity is that it’ll get you focusing on something better than your current circumstances. Right now I’m sitting on my front porch, typing and watching a cute little bird hop around looking for leftovers from the picnic my child and I had earlier. I felt it relax me, and I smiled. But, a bit ago I was checking in with myself trying to figure out what’s wrong with me today – feeling a little grumpier than usual on the inside.

Yes, there are reasons to be a little down or grumpy if I really wanted to stay that way. But, I know from experience that if I look hard enough I’ll find many things to be grateful for – and I’ll feel better.

We often take the little things for granted, until a really serious situation shows up. But, we don’t have to wait for the serious situation.  Look around and think of the many things you can be grateful for. In this example, I chose to focus on the good – and though it may not always be easy, it’s a choice we can make.

2. You’ll begin to feel better

I can honestly tell you that practicing gratitude daily changed my life and made me feel so much better overall. I used to feel down a lot and fell apart much easier when things went wrong – but now I purposely try to practice gratefulness and positivity as much as I can.

Looking at the past, I can see that I was letting my circumstances at the time determine how I felt and therefore how I reacted. This was all I knew. And, if you feel like this is you right now, don’t be hard on yourself. We usually do what we know and what we’re able to do at the time – and it takes practice to not let circumstances keep you feeling down for long.

And honestly, sometimes they still get the best of us! Nobody’s perfect, and I’m not perfect. Life happens. But, we can do things that help, like practicing gratitude daily.

3. You’ll learn to appreciate the little things

Finding things to be grateful for every day will help you appreciate the little things in life. And then, you’ll have more peace in your life and be able to enjoy life more. So when you start feeling down, try doing something that lifts you up right away (or as soon as possible).

You might try to make a gratitude list, listing a few things that you can be grateful for, even if it’s hard. You can write it or even do this in your mind. I’ve found this so helpful!

I used to do my gratitude list each morning when I woke up by listing three things I was grateful for at the time. Something like I am grateful for my son & the time I’m getting to spend with him – and I’d let myself feel the gratefulness. Then I’d maybe choose something smaller that I was grateful for, and so on.

4. You’ll begin to be more resilient

Be resilient. Duck and dodge – and if something occasionally hits you, that’s okay. Shake it off and keep on going! -alb

Practicing gratitude daily will also make you more resilient. You’ll give up less and succeed at things, or get through things better, more often. And, that’s probably because you don’t stay down for long when you’re seeking out things to be grateful for and thinking positively.

And, this is awesome! It’s as if you’re going through an obstacle course with someone throwing things at you, but you’re learning to duck and dodge as you go. You’re able to handle more and accomplish more with resiliency, which makes it one of the best benefits of gratitude.

5. You’ll become more empowered and happier

Practicing gratitude and positivity works by changing your perspective, or how you view your situation.

When someone or something upsets us, it’s easy to get stuck dwelling in that frustrating space. But staying in that space doesn’t serve you. That’s why writing down what you’re grateful for is so powerful. As your mood lightens through daily gratitude, you begin to see things through a softer, clearer lens.

This isn’t about excusing someone who hurt you or pretending bad things didn’t happen. It’s about refusing to give your power away to negative circumstances. It’s about choosing to let go.

  • The “Letting Go” Effect: When you focus on what is good, it becomes so much easier to release the heavy stuff you were never meant to carry. It might take a moment at first, but with practice, moving forward gets faster and lighter.
  • Reclaiming Your Peace: Successful and truly happy people often share that practicing gratitude daily is their secret weapon. Reclaiming your peace helps you step back into your own power.

When you practice feeling grateful, your mindset shifts, your heart lightens, and your life naturally becomes happier as a result!

How to Practice Gratitude Every Morning

Mornings can feel rushed, especially when your mind immediately jumps to your long to-do list or whatever stress is waiting for you. But taking just two or three minutes before the day gets noisy to practice a little gratitude can completely shift your energy.

And, you don’t need a complicated ritual or an hour of silence to make this work.

Here are some simple tips for how to practice gratitude every morning to help you ease into a gentle morning gratitude habit:

  • The “3-Breath” Wake-Up: Before you even get out of bed or grab your phone, take three slow, deep breaths. With each breath, name one tiny thing you’re grateful for right in that moment – like your soft pillow, a warm blanket, or the quiet sound of the house.
  • Keep a 3-Item Gratitude List: Keep a simple notebook on your nightstand or sitting by your morning coffee. Write down three quick things you appreciate. They don’t have to be big or profound! (For example: “My son’s sweet laugh yesterday,” “A warm cup of coffee,” or “Clear morning light.”)
  • Anchor It to Your Current Habit: If adding something new feels overwhelming, attach your gratitude practice to something you already do every single morning. While you brush your teeth, wait for the coffee maker to brew, or take your morning stroll, mentally list three good things in your life.
  • Focus on the Feeling: The secret to making morning gratitude actually work isn’t just writing the words – it’s letting yourself feel the warmth in your chest for a few seconds. That brief feeling is what helps reset your nervous system for the day ahead.

How to Practice Gratitude When Depressed

When you’re dealing with depression, standard advice like “just look on the bright side” can feel completely out of touch. And, when everything feels heavy, forced positivity doesn’t help – and that’s okay. Learning how to practice gratitude when depressed isn’t about ignoring your pain or pretending everything’s fine. It’s simply about finding one tiny thread of comfort to hold onto while you heal.

If you’re going through a dark season, here are a few gentle ways to approach gratitude without overwhelming yourself:

  • Lower the Bar to the Bare Minimum: You don’t need to be grateful for big life milestones right now. Focus on basic physical comforts. Be grateful for a soft blanket, a warm shower, a cool glass of water, or the fact that your bed is a safe space today.
  • Acknowledge the Neutral Things: If feeling “happy” or “thankful” feels too far out of reach, aim for neutral appreciation. Notice things that simply are – like the sun coming through the window, the sound of rain, or a pet sitting nearby.
  • Use “Even Though” Statements: Honor your real feelings instead of pushing them down. Try framing your thoughts like: “Even though today feels incredibly hard, I’m grateful I get to rest,” or “Even though I feel overwhelmed, I’m glad I made a warm cup of tea.”
  • Keep It Internal & Private: You don’t have to explain your gratitude to anyone else or put on a brave face. Let this be a quiet, private moment just between you and yourself, with zero pressure to perform.
