Rye finds stillness on “Could We Be Quiet Now?”

Newcastle doesn’t get enough credit for the artists it quietly turns out. Rye, Lithuanian-born, now rooted in the city’s music scene had released her single “Could We Be Quiet Now?” and it sounds exactly like the title asks: like someone pressing a hand against the noise of the world and begging it to stop.

The track opens in sparse spoken word before settling into a groove of electric guitar, subtle synths, and rhythms that feel both hypnotic and coiled. It’s the sound of emotional overload rendered precisely — that specific state where you’re not asking for comfort or solutions, just silence. Rye’s voice shifts between vulnerability and flat refusal across the spoken-word sections and blunt, exhausted verses, before the outro unravels into something restless and raw.

Rye grew up immersed in Vilnius’s underground electronic scene and the Lithuanian tradition of sung poetry, and that dual inheritance is audible in her work. She writes and performs across English, Lithuanian, and Spanish, weaving spoken word into compositions that feel dreamlike and quietly destabilising — beautiful, but never quite comfortable.

Since her 2024 debut EP I Feel Everything, momentum has built steadily. The lead single landed on BBC Radio 6, she signed with Wipe Out Music Publishing, and she’s performed live sessions for BBC Introducing Newcastle and on Lithuania’s national station LRT Opus. She also appeared at The Notion Events showcase during the Mercury Awards Fringe — the kind of room that tends to notice.
