The myth of automatic referrals: why good work alone isn’t enough

Ask 100 accountants where their best new clients come from, and 99 will say “referrals.”
The 100th probably didn’t hear the question because they were too busy chasing a late-paying client.

It’s no secret: word-of-mouth introductions to the right sort of new clients can be gold dust for accountants.
A decent referral comes ready-wrapped in trust. There’s no awkward selling dance. No “prove yourself” slog. Half the battle is already won.

Decent referrals feel like the easiest way to grow your practice — until you realise they rarely happen by accident.  Although most accountants talk about the value of referrals, few have an actual strategy for encouraging more of them. Or for ensuring that the referrals they get are to the type of people they actually want as clients.

The assumption is that good work naturally leads to recommendations. Maybe it does – in time.
But in reality, most clients aren’t sitting around thinking:
“Who can I introduce to my brilliant accountant today?”

They’re busy. They’ve got businesses to build, kids’ school runs to sort, and their own lives to run.

Referrals only happen when you’re top of mind – and when you make it easy for clients to sing your praises to the right sort of people.

Without a simple, thoughtful strategy, even the happiest clients will stay silent. And beware of adopting one of those desperate sounding email sign offs that typically generate the wrong sort of referrals. Generic messages like: “Our business thrives on referrals. If you know ANYONE who needs a new accountant please tell them about us”

When referrals are handled well, they don’t just bring warm leads and time wasters.
They boost your reputation, shorten sales conversations, and attract loyal, higher-value clients.
It’s marketing without the marketing budget.

But done badly – or worse, not done at all – you’ll miss out on opportunities sitting right under your nose.
And no amount of networking breakfasts or social media posts can replace the credibility of a genuine personal recommendation.

So, where do you start?

Well, it’s not about simply “asking for referrals” at random moments.
It’s about knowing when, how, and even who to ask.
It’s about building the kind of client relationships where referrals happen naturally – not because you begged for them, but because clients genuinely want to help you.

Every accountant’s client base is different.
Your approach to encouraging referrals should be too.

There’s no one-size-fits-all magic script (despite what the sales ‘gurus’ might say).
But with the right strategy, referrals can become a consistent, reliable source of growth – without feeling awkward, pushy, or desperate.

Having said that, you may not be in a position to wait for the referrals that could be coming down the line. In which case you’ll need to do more than just sit and wait patiently.

If you want to turn more of your happy clients into loyal ambassadors or to explore how else you could generate the clients you really want, let’s have a conversation.
I can help you find a tailored, comfortable way to build a steady stream of referrals and business. An approach that feels natural for you, your clients, and your practice.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
