Thus, any tags firing on this trigger (and any variables resolved on this trigger event) will always have access to the same value of each Data Layer variable.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are situations where this is not a good thing. One is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/understanding-tag-sequencing-in-google-tag-manager\/#5-note-about-using-datalayer-push-in-the-sequence\">tag sequencing<\/a>, and the other is a scenario where you want to run some custom code that should access the <strong>latest<\/strong> value of the Data Layer variable at a moment in time <strong>after<\/strong> the tag has already fired. However, you only want to send that event if the user is logged out, for some obscure reason.<\/p>\n<p>This is what your first attempt might look like. It\u2019s a Custom HTML tag set to fire when the page is first loaded with the <strong>All Pages<\/strong> trigger.<\/p>\n<div class=\"highlight\">\n<pre style=\"background-color:#fff;-moz-tab-size:4;-o-tab-size:4;tab-size:4\"><code class=\"language-html\" data-lang=\"html\">script&gt;\n  (<span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>() {\n    <span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.addEventListener(<span style=\"color:#a50\">'beforeunload'<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#00a\">function<\/span>() {\n\t  <span style=\"color:#00a\">if<\/span> ({{DLV - loginStatus}} === <span style=\"color:#a50\">'logged-out'<\/span>) {\n  \t    <span style=\"color:#0aa\">window<\/span>.dataLayer.push({\n\t      event: <span style=\"color:#a50\">'userLeavesPages'<\/span>\n\t    });\n\t  }\n\t});\n  })();\n<span style=\"color:#1e90ff;font-weight:bold\">script<\/span>&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now, when the Custom HTML tag fires, the <code>beforeunload<\/code> listener is created, and the <strong>{{DLV &#8211; loginStatus}}<\/strong> variable is resolved to whatever value it had when the tag fired.<\/p>\n<p>Then, when the user is about to leave the page by closing the browser or clicking a link, the <code>beforeunload<\/code> callback is executed, and it checks if this original state of <code>loginStatus<\/code> is \u201clogged-out\u201d, in which case it runs the <code>dataLayer.push()<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>Do you see the problem here? The <code>beforeunload<\/code> event is not fired until the user tries to leave the page, but the <strong>{{DLV &#8211; loginStatus}}<\/strong> is resolved to whatever value it had when the tag itself was initially run. If the <code>loginStatus<\/code> <strong>changes<\/strong> while the user is on the page, it wouldn\u2019t make a difference. The initial value is what\u2019s used in the <code>if...<\/code> condition, meaning you\u2019ll risk losing valid hits because of that.<\/p>\n<p>So we need a mechanism that fetches the value of the Data Layer variable <strong>when the relevant code is run<\/strong>. We want the <code>if...<\/code> condition to evaluate against what the value of <code>loginStatus<\/code> is <strong>at the time of the <code>beforeunload<\/code> event<\/strong> and <em>not<\/em> when the tag is first run.<\/p>\n<p>For this, we use a JavaScript method that is built into Google Tag Manager and allows us to do exactly this.<\/p>\n<p><code>window.google_tag_manager[{{Container ID}}].dataLayer.get('variableNameHere');<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Remember to enable the Container ID <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/variable-guide-google-tag-manager\/#built-in-variables\">built-in variable<\/a> for this.<\/p>\n<p>This method polls GTM\u2019s internal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/google-tag-manager-data-model\/\">data model<\/a> and fetches the latest value of the <code>variableNameHere<\/code> Data Layer variable.
