having a neon<br \/>\ngreen sign on your front porch that reads \u201cJust Be Kind\u201d is that it marks your<br \/>\nhome as a safe space.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And that was never<br \/>\nany more apparent than this evening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">I was sitting at the<br \/>\ndining room table writing when the front door opened.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I assumed it was my partner David, but when I<br \/>\nlooked up it was a strange man entering our home.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He did not appear threatening, so I did not<br \/>\npanic, but walked over to greet him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">He was obviously very<br \/>\nupset.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI need help,\u201d he said.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI locked my keys in my apartment\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">I jumped in, quickly<br \/>\ntrying to brainstorm how we could solve that big but not MAJOR problem.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cOh, your keys?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s ok!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>We will help get them out,\u201d I naively told him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">But the keys weren\u2019t the<br \/>\nproblem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cNo.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It is my daughter.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She was in a car accident.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They called me.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It was near Maryland.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">Ahhh \u2013 this was getting<br \/>\nmore complex and I was not understanding how we could really HELP in this<br \/>\nsituation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">\u201cI locked my apartment key<br \/>\ninside.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I need to drive to<br \/>\nMaryland.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>She is in the hospital.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But I do not have enough gas\u2026\u201d he sheepishly<br \/>\ntold me.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cMy car is over there\u2026\u201d he<br \/>\ngestured, trying to say, \u201cI am not a scammer, this is real!\u201d without having to<br \/>\nsay it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">Well, THIS was now a tangible<br \/>\nproblem with a solution I could sponsor \u2013 gas money from the Kindness Activist<br \/>\nfunds.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIt is ok!\u201d I told him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWe have money for your gas.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I told him to go to his car and wait while I went<br \/>\nto get the funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">David had joined us by<br \/>\nthat point, so he and David chatted while I got some things together.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Cold blue Gatorade to drink on his ride \u2013<br \/>\ncheck.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Freshly baked snickerdoodle<br \/>\ncookies thanks to an amazing donor \u2013 check.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>And $50 for gas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">I gave him the snacks,<br \/>\nthen held out the money.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was<br \/>\ndumbfounded.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He just stared at it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">\u201cNo, too much\u2026\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">\u201cSir, this is for<br \/>\nyou.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>For gas.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you don\u2019t need it today, put in more gas<br \/>\ntomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And David reminded him<br \/>\nthat gas is expensive, so he should take it all.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He asked if he could leave his license with<br \/>\nus (as \u201cinsurance\u201d I guess, though the money was a gift and not a loan).<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Of course we declined.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">He was visibly shaken and<br \/>\nvery thankful.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I asked if I could give<br \/>\nhim a hug, and he was happy to accept.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And<br \/>\nwhile I hugged him, he began to cry.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>Real tears.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was a strong man,<br \/>\nbut the fear, the sadness, and the gratitude proved to too much and tears<br \/>\nflowed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">\u201cI come because I know you<br \/>\nhelp.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I know you help people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">We got him some tissues,<br \/>\nand I rubbed his back.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I was worried he<br \/>\nmight be too upset to drive and kept encouraging him to drive safely.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s when he told us, \u201cThe reason I cry\u2026<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>You give me a hug.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And today is my BIRTHDAY.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">His birthday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">His daughter in an<br \/>\naccident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">His keys locked inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">His gas tank on empty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">Having to ask strangers to<br \/>\nhelp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">His birthday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">I hugged him again and we<br \/>\ntold him happy birthday.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">I hope he drives<br \/>\nsafely.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I hope his daughter is ok.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I hope his birthday gets better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">And I am glad that he knew<br \/>\nour home was a safe place to find
