Late last Friday <\/b>evening, I returned from a most enjoyable
\nand eagerly anticipated short break on England\u2019s South Coast.<\/b> The break
\ninvolved an overnight stay in the West Sussex<\/b> town of Chicheste<\/b>r, although
\nseeing as there\u2019s a rather attractive cathedral at its heart, perhaps
\nChichester<\/b> should be described as a city. Perhaps its compact nature is more
\napplicable to a town but whatever the description, Chichester <\/b>is the county
\ntown of West Sussex.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

My visit to this cathedral city, involved meeting up with legendary
\npub man Stafford Paul,<\/b> whose intention was to spend a couple of days escorting two
\nvisitors from the United States<\/b> around the pubs, and other delights of this
\ncompact Sussex<\/b> town. The visitors from
\nacross the Atlantic<\/b>, were Dave<\/b> and Joan Southworth<\/b>, who are regular visitors to
\nthese shores, sometimes in conjunction with Dave’s<\/b> brother Dick.<\/b> This time
\naround, Dave<\/b> and Joan<\/b> would be spending a month in the UK,<\/b> and for the purpose of the visit had
\nbased themselves at a rented cottage to the south of Chichester. Paul<\/b> had invited me to join the group for this two day, exploratory visit. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The idea for such a meet-up, had come from
\nStafford Paul,<\/b> who had joined the couple, last year on a “Proper Day Out”<\/i><\/b> in
\nthe city of Lincoln.<\/b> Also present at that early autumn pub \u201cexploration\u201d<\/b> trip was
\nnone other than Retired Martin,<\/b> pub-ticker extraordinaire and someone who must
\nsurely hold the record for the number of pubs he has visited in the United
\nKingdom<\/b>. This achievement came about as the result of his ultimately successful
\nquest to every pub in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

After learning the Southworth\u2019s <\/b>intention to visit the
\nEnglish South Coast<\/b> in mid-February, Paul <\/b>arranged to meet up with them, and
\nkindly suggested that I might like to join the group. Paul<\/b> subsequently went ahead
\nand booked three nights\u2019 accommodation at the Chichester Inn<\/b>, an historic pub
\nin the heart of Chichester. <\/b>After a bit of necessary prodding from Paul<\/b>,\u00a0 I too booked
\na Thursday <\/b>night stay at the same inn, which would allow two days to visit both Chichester, <\/b>and
\nthe neighbouring naval city of Portsmouth.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

My son Matthew <\/b>and I visited Chichester<\/b> at the start of
\nNovember 2023<\/b>, which meant I was reasonably familiar with the town\u2019s layout, and
\nits pubs, but as far as Portsmouth<\/b> was concerned, that would be a new location. But not completely new, as I had passed through Portsmouth<\/b> in the summer of
\n1969<\/b>, in order to take a ferry across to the Isle of Wight.<\/b> That trip was as a member
\nof a youth group, that was visiting the island for a walking holiday, staying
\novernight at a couple of the IOW\u2019s Youth Hostels.<\/b> I was only 14<\/b> at the time, so
\npubs weren\u2019t of much interest to me, but I was quite keen on striking up a
\nrelationship with one or two of the girls in the party. \u00a0<\/span>This involved nothing more serious than holding hand, plus a quick kiss and the odd cuddle. My endeavours were reasonably successful, although looking back I feel a little uncomfortable about unceremoniously
\nditching one young lady, after discovering that a more attractive looking, and slightly
\nmore mature girl, had the hots for me. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The things we do when we\u2019re young, but my other interest was
\nmusic, pop rather than rock, as my tastes back then were a little unsophisticated, to put
\nit mildly. So the news that Bob Dylan <\/b>was to play the Isle of Wight Festival<\/b>
\nas his comeback gig, following that <\/u>motorcycle crash, sort of passed me by,
\nand the fact that the event was taking place some distance from where we were
\nstaying, meant there was little chance of getting to see the legendary
\nmusician. The fact that I missed Dylan\u2019s<\/b> comeback live performance wasn\u2019t lost
\nupon life-long, Dylan fan Dave,<\/b> during our subsequent conversation, but those
\nwere the circumstances, at the time. Besides, it\u2019s unlikely that a group of youngsters,
\nin their early teens could have gained admission to the festival.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

As for the walking holiday, we started with an overnight
\nstay at Cowes,<\/b> before heading inland to the heart of the island. We ended up at
\nthe seaside resort of Sandown <\/b>and Shanklin<\/b>, where there was another youth
\nhostel \u2013 spoiler alert, there\u2019s only YHA hostel,<\/b> remaining on the IOW! <\/b>It was a
\nweek of glorious sunny weather, with nothing in the way of rain, and some wonderfully
\nrefreshing sea air. The freedom of wandering through some beautiful, and
\nunspoilt countryside, with other young people, the same age as me, was
\nsomething to behold, and whilst I have seriously digressed from the main story,
\nI couldn\u2019t resist slipping in that nostalgic look back, even though I failed to
\nsee Bob Dylan.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Moving swiftly on, and getting the narrative back on track, Portsmouth<\/b>
\nacted as both departure and arrival point for that trip across to the Isle of Wight.<\/b>
\nThe outward journey saw us arriving in Cowes<\/b>, whilst the return crossing of the
\nSolent<\/b>, saw us departing the island, from Ryde.<\/b> I remember walking along Ryde
\npier<\/b>, presumably to board the vessel taking us back to the mainland, whilst Crosby,
\nStills & Nash\u2019s<\/b> first UK <\/b>hit, Marrakesh Express, <\/b>was playing from a nearby radio.
\nThe other point of interest was the journey over from Portsmouth <\/b>had been by hovercraft<\/b>,
\nwhilst the return trip was by hydrofoil. <\/b>Both crossings were much quicker, than
\nby conventional ferry, but the latter was far less noisy than the hovercraft. We
\nwere also able to see out of the window without our view being obstructed by spray,
\nfrom the curtain of air that raised the vessel off the water and allowed it to skim
\nat speed, across the surface of the water. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Other memories of Portsmouth a<\/b>re confined to a visit to Admiral
\nNelson\u2019s<\/b> historic flagship, HMS Victory,<\/b> plus a boat trip around the harbour undertaken
\nby a friend and I, which allowed us to see part of the Royal Navy<\/b> flotilla moored
\nup there. During our time on the south coast, I was happy for Stafford Paul <\/b>and
\nDave Southworth<\/b> to act as guides. Both of them had visited Chichester<\/b>
\npreviously and Dave<\/b> had also visited Portsmouth. <\/b>I travelled down to
\nChichester, <\/b>by train, from Tonbridge, <\/b>on the Thursday<\/b>, and returned from
\nPortsmouth<\/b> the following day, also by rail. As mentioned earlier, the trip
\ninvolved an overnight stay at the Chichester Inn<\/b>, for both Paul<\/b> and me.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I opted for the cross-country rail route, taking advantage
\nof the Tonbridge-Redhill<\/b> link, which allows connections with a number of mainlines heading south, away from the capital. Avoiding London <\/b>meant a considerable reduction in rail
\nfare, and by using my Senior Rail Card<\/b> I was able to purchase a period return
\nfor the bargain price of \u00a321.75.<\/b>\u00a0 After changing
\ntrains at Redhill <\/b>and again at Three Bridges,<\/b> I arrived in Chichester<\/b> shortly after
\nmidday. I particularly enjoyed the journey through Sussex<\/b>, from Three Bridges<\/b> across
\nto Arundel,<\/b> where the line follows the gap in the South Downs<\/b>, cut in
\nprehistoric times, by the river Arun. <\/b>Despite the lack of recent rain, the river
\nseemed fairly full and was close in places to the top of the banks. The fields
\ntoo, were waterlogged in places, and as we approached the village of Amberley,<\/b>
\nmemories of walking the South Downs Way, <\/b>came flooding back.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

That section of the SDW<\/b> walk took place in 2009,<\/b> when with
\nmy friend Eric,<\/b> and I had walked the middle section of trail from the “Jack
\n& Jill”<\/i><\/b> windmills, at Clayton<\/b>, to Petersfield,<\/b> just across the border into
\nHampshire<\/b>. As the train journeyed through the Arun gap<\/b>, I’m sure I recognised
\nthe footbridge across the river, and could see the footpath disappearing up the
\nsteep scarp slope of the South Downs. <\/b>That was certainly a steep climb, and one
\nthat seemed to go on forever before we reached the top of the hills.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

After an
\novernight stay at the excellent Sportsman<\/b> pub in Amberley, <\/b>we ought to have
\nbeen suitably rested, but I can still remember us, huffing and puffing up that
\nhill! Enjoying the views from the window, are one of the main
\nattractions of train travel, and this was a recurrent topic of conversation between
\nStafford Paul<\/b> and I during our time in the two south coast towns. The memories the
\ntrain journey brought back, and that I\u2019ve just described are priceless, although
\nI trust I haven\u2019t bored readers too much, by recounting them! <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

My train pulled into
\nChichester<\/b> station, shortly after midday, and I then made my way to the pre-arranged
\nrendezvous at the Fountain<\/b>, in South Street.<\/b> The pub is owned by Dorset<\/b>
\nbrewers, Hall & Woodhouse,<\/b> and was the same pub that Matthew<\/b> and I had
\nvisited, on our 2023 <\/b>trip to the city. \u00a0<\/span>It
\nseems a convenient place to beak the narrative, before continuing, next time
\nwith the main event, which of course was exploring the pubs of both Chichester<\/b>
\nand Portsmouth.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
