\nI originally did not intend on writing on a trip report on this flight.\u00a0 <\/span>But given the relative rarity of long haul TAP Portugal trip reports \u2013 especially on an unique A330 with original Azul Business Class seats \u2013 I decided to share with you the small number of photos I took as well as some thoughts on the flight.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nI arrived in Boston (BOS) directly from San Francisco (SFO) on board JetBlue\u2019s excellent A321 Mint service<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span>Connecting to TAP was as simple as walking from gate C9 to C17.\u00a0 <\/span>No re-clearing through security, no inter-terminal transfer hassles\u2026nice! \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

Easy connection. \u00a0My TAP flight can be seen directly behind my arrival flight from SFO.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

\nI had about one hour before scheduled departure.\u00a0 <\/span>Gate agents were announcing over the loud speakers that if you had arrived from a connecting flight, you had to re-check-in at the gate for documentation verification.\u00a0 <\/span>In additional to passport check and reissuing of boarding passes on TAP ticket stock (my airline geekiness was thankful for that), gate agents were strictly enforcing the carry-on size limit using the bag template.\u00a0 <\/span>Despite them telling everyone that the bag would be checked for free, people were still reluctant.\u00a0 <\/span>When it was my turn at the counter, I immediately offered my bag for gate check.\u00a0 <\/span>Agent gave me a TAP luggage tag.\u00a0 <\/span>I pointed out my bag already had a name tag.\u00a0 <\/span>She replied matter-of-factly, \u201cit\u2019s not a TAP tag\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span>Whatever<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>With my new boarding pass in hand and bag receipt issued, I was invited to \u201cThe Lounge\u201d just a couple gates down.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“The Lounge” is a common-use premium class lounge used by all airlines at BOS.\u00a0 <\/span>There was a decent selection of hot food and alcohol.\u00a0 <\/span>A second and separate non-alcoholic beverage counter alleviated any potential crowding.\u00a0 <\/span>Despite it being a busy afternoon with a number of international departures, I did not have a problem finding a table.<\/p>\n

\nI went back to gate C17 a few minutes before 5:50 pm boarding time and there was already a queue at the door.\u00a0 <\/span>Gate agents were telling people not to line up and they will be called up in order of grouping.\u00a0 <\/span>The holding area was small and it got rather crowded (hence the announcement).\u00a0 <\/span>It was unfortunate that the agents\u2019 pleas went on unheeded.<\/p>\n

\nAzul Xtra<\/b><\/p>\n

\nPrior to embarking on this trip, I knew TAP was in the process of renovating its Business Class product.\u00a0 <\/span>At check-in, I was happy to see a staggered Business Class seat map, indicating an aircraft with new seats.\u00a0 <\/span>Or so I thought.\u00a0 <\/span>Unbeknownst to me until later, my A330-200 CS-TOS is the only aircraft in TAP\u2019s fleet leased from Azul in Brazil.\u00a0 <\/span>The aircraft is still flying with Azul\u2019s original \u201cXtra Business\u201d seats.\u00a0 <\/span>(Sistership A330-200 CS-TOT was also leased from Azul for a short period between summer 2016 and spring 2017.)\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nI am all too familiar with these popular staggered Business seats made by Stelia.\u00a0 <\/span>I had experienced them previously flying Asiana, ANA, and Thai.\u00a0 <\/span>While this arrangement offers direct aisle access and maximum privacy, the staggered design is certainly not my favorite.\u00a0 <\/span>The window seats are simply too claustrophobic for my liking. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nPillow, blanket, headphones, amenity kit, and menu were already placed at each seat.\u00a0 <\/span>The amenity kit was in a rather creative sardine can.\u00a0 <\/span>I chuckled when my neighbor across the aisle opened his can and disappointingly said, \u201cawe, no sardines!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nPre-Departure\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\nFlight attendant offered pre-departure drinks, I went with orange juice.\u00a0 <\/span>The purser followed with a selection of newspapers.\u00a0 <\/span>Apparently, they were not restocked while on the ground in BOS.\u00a0 <\/span>All except for one was in Portuguese.\u00a0 <\/span>I went with the only English choice \u2013 European edition WSJ<\/i>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThat was also my first interaction with the Portuguese crew.\u00a0 <\/span>Language barrier was not an issue at all.\u00a0 <\/span>Flight attendants spoke perfect English and understood everything I said.\u00a0 <\/span>I found this to be true in general while in Portugal as well.\u00a0 <\/span>A pleasant surprise! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

\nShort Long Haul<\/b><\/p>\n

\nAt 6:20 pm, we pushed back from gate C17 right on time.\u00a0 <\/span>Some 20 minutes later, we took to the air from Runway 09 and continued eastward to Lisbon.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nWith the sun setting behind us, the crew expediently began dinner service.\u00a0 <\/span>With a total flying time of six hours, there would not be much time for rest in between dinner and the pre-arrival meal. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nTo go along with the canap\u00e9,<\/span> I went with my usual drink,\u00a0<\/span>Coke Zero with lemon.\u00a0 <\/span>I was given the full can (large can for European standard) as well as ice.\u00a0 <\/span>Take that BA and Air France! \u00a0That’s the way it should be done!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>When I took a bite of the canap\u00e9, it had an unexpected pungent fishy taste.\u00a0 <\/span>I had forgotten what was on it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>With a sour look on my face, I checked the menu and realized it was sea urchin roe.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nMeal and beverage carts quickly returned with the starter \u2013 smoked salmon salad.\u00a0 <\/span>I was offered soup, which I accepted.\u00a0 <\/span>It was poured from a rather unattractive thermos that looked like someone\u2019s morning coffee bottle.\u00a0 <\/span>My drink was swiftly replenished with another can with more ice in my glass. \u00a0<\/span>The smoked salmon salad tasted very unique but the soup\u2019s temperature was tepid, though not unusual among all the soup I have had while flying.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nAt this point, I could tell the service pace was going to be quick.\u00a0 <\/span>No sooner after the meal cart went past, the purser returned with the clean-up cart.\u00a0 <\/span>It was like an orchestrated merry-go-around:\u00a0 <\/span>meal cart \u2013 drink cart \u2013 trash cart round and round!<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nMeal cart returned with my main:\u00a0 <\/span>chicken breast with Yukon baby potatoes and kale.\u00a0 <\/span>I took a peek at my neighbor\u2019s dish from across the aisle.\u00a0 <\/span>The giant shrimp with saffron rice looked like a tastier dish.\u00a0 <\/span>Oh well.\u00a0 <\/span>There was nothing impressive with my chicken dish.\u00a0 <\/span>It was just your standard meat and potato with overcooked vegetable airline meal.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nOnce again, I had to eat quickly, because here came the plate pickup.\u00a0 <\/span>Being a Portuguese airline, the Port wine was served as its own course prior to the dessert cart.\u00a0 Would you have expected it any other way? \u00a0<\/span>The purser asked \u201ccheese, fruit?\u201d and paused as if they were the only choices.\u00a0 <\/span>What I wanted, the dulce de leche ice cream, came a second later: \u201c\u2026or sweet<\/i>?\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>I smiled and said \u201csweet\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span>Thinking about it, there isn\u2019t really an English translation for \u201cdulce de leche\u201d, is there? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nThe dulce de leche ice cream was very rich, full of caramel goodness.\u00a0 <\/span>Purser returned with a box consisting a choice of small chocolate bars.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I went with \u201csal\u201d. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nOne hour and 10 minutes after take-off, dinner service was complete and lights in the cabin dimmed.\u00a0 <\/span>It was only 5 pm back home and nowhere near bedtime.\u00a0 <\/span>Despite that, I took my amenity kit to the lavatory and prepped myself for bed.\u00a0 <\/span>I thought perhaps, between all the eating and the dark cabin, they will put me in a sleepy mood.<\/p>\n

\nWith my seat now in the full flat mode, I snuggled in my blanket and lined up my body with the right seat cushions to get comfortable.\u00a0 <\/span>With my Bose noise cancelling headphone on, I attempted to sleep. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nArrival<\/b><\/p>\n

\nAfter closing my eyes for three hours (but without any productive sleep), simulated sunrise lit up the cabin.\u00a0 <\/span>Lisbon was 90 minutes away. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nBefore arrival meal began with a choice of beverage \u2013 I went with orange juice.\u00a0 <\/span>Meal tray was followed by bread basket filled with delicious warmed breads and pastries.\u00a0 <\/span>After taking one, the flight attendant encouraged me to take another (and yet a third on the second walk around).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nCoffee refill was gladly obliged in a fresh cup served on a tray.\u00a0 <\/span>How classy!<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nThere were no air traffic delays as we made a straight in approach over the still-sleeping city.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n

\nAfter clearing Runway 03, we made a right turn and quickly came to gate 145.\u00a0 <\/span>Wheel stop was at 5:18 am local time, blocking just under 6 hours. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\nThere are horror stories of long queues at Lisbon passport control during morning arrivals.\u00a0 <\/span>I got lucky on this day, being among the first to arrive into LIS; I was through in about 30 minutes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While on my ride into the city, I realized it was 11 pm back home.\u00a0 <\/span>It was bedtime – but the day was just getting started in Lisbon!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nFinal Thoughts<\/b><\/p>\n

\nOverall, TAP\u2019s service was excellent.\u00a0 <\/span>The flight attendants spoke perfect English.\u00a0 <\/span>They were down-to-earth, friendly, and unpretentious.\u00a0 <\/span>I like that!\u00a0 <\/span>However, meal pacing was too fast in my opinion.\u00a0 <\/span>My guess it was necessitated by the fact that the flight was so short and the crew wanted to maximize passengers\u2019 sleep time.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Meal presentation and quality were middle of the road, nothing spectacular, but everything within expectations for Business Class.\u00a0 <\/span>Do realize that by this fall, TAP will be revamping their menu with a new \u201cTaste of the Stars<\/a>\u201d program with Portuguese dishes inspired by Michelin starred chefs. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\nTAP\u2019s popular \u201cPortugal Stopover<\/a>\u201d program now allows medium- and long-haul passengers to stopover in Lisbon or Porto for up to five days without extra fare.\u00a0 <\/span>Time is right to give TAP a try and make Portugal a part of your holiday while you are on your way to your final destination. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
