A Facebook ad drove home the lesson that hyphens\u2019 role as connectors is important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine life pain free,\u201d said the ad. This hyphenless sentence could be interpreted as \u201cImagine getting \u2018life pain\u2019 at no cost.\u201d No, thanks, I\u2019ll pass on that offer.<\/p>\n<p>The advertiser should have written, \u201cImagine life pain-free.\u201d This makes it clear that \u201cpain\u201d relates to \u201cfree,\u201d not life. It\u2019s important to use hyphens if their absence changes your meaning or makes it unclear. This is true even though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailywritingtips.com\/compound-modifiers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">compound modifiers<\/a> usually aren\u2019t hyphenated when they follow a noun.<\/p>\n<p>In the financial world, the following phrases typically use hyphens:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>closed-end fund<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px; color: #000000;\">risk-adjusted returns<\/span><\/li>\n<li>sub-advised funds (although there\u2019s a trend to delete the hyphen to use \u201csubadvised\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>target-date funds<\/li>\n<li>time-weighted rate of return<\/li>\n<li>year-to-date period<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For more on hyphens, check out these resources:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Note: This post was updated on Feb. 18, 2025.
