Thus, it\u2019s a chick-and-the-egg situation &#8211; you can\u2019t create the trigger until you know what to track, and you can\u2019t track until you create the trigger.<\/p>\n<p>Well, here\u2019s the thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You MUST create a trigger for the Click variables to populate with values<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The variables will not start collecting data until you enable one of the following triggers:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/trigger-guide-google-tag-manager\/#5-click-and-form-triggers\"><strong>Click &#8211; All Elements<\/strong><\/a> trigger &#8211; when you want to track clicks on <em>any<\/em> element.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A <strong>Click &#8211; Just Links<\/strong> trigger &#8211; when you want to track clicks on <em>link<\/em> elements (<code><a href=\"&quot;...&quot;\"\/><\/code>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/track-form-engagement-with-google-tag-manager\/\"><strong>Form Submit<\/strong><\/a> trigger &#8211; when you want to track submissions of a <em>form element<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/element-visibility-trigger-google-tag-manager\/\"><strong>Element Visibility<\/strong><\/a> trigger &#8211; when you to track the <em>visibility<\/em> or <em>appearance<\/em> of an HTML element.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Naturally, if you want to track clicks, you\u2019ll need to create either an All Elements or a Just Links trigger, as both track clicks. The only difference is that the latter is more restrictive, since it only tracks clicks on link elements or nested elements within a link node.<\/p>\n<p>So, the <strong>first thing to check if Click variables are undefined is whether you\u2019ve remembered to create a Click trigger<\/strong>. Easiest thing to do is create a simple All Elements trigger with no restrictions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You don\u2019t even have to add it to a tag<\/strong>. Just by creating the trigger will GTM start listening to click events.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1874 \/ 742;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2019\/09\/click-all-elements.jpg\" title=\"Click - All Elements\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"742\" width=\"1874\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2019\/09\/click-all-elements.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Click - All Elements\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Once the trigger is enabled, you can enter Preview mode. At this point, any click on your web page should introduce a <strong>Click<\/strong> element into the Preview mode window. By <strong>selecting that Click element<\/strong> you should see the variables populate:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1982 \/ 572;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2019\/09\/select-click-event.jpg\" title=\"Select click event\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"572\" width=\"1982\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2019\/09\/select-click-event.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"Select click event\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Which brings me to the next tip. If Click variables are undefined, <strong>make sure you\u2019ve selected the Click event<\/strong> in the Preview mode message list. GTM Preview mode shows you the values of variables that existed at the time when the <strong>selected<\/strong> message was processed.<\/p>\n<p>Always avoid debugging with <strong>Summary<\/strong> selected, as that simply shows you the latest values. This is irrelevant information if you want to know what values existed when a tag fired, for example, as you would need to select the trigger event for the tag to know that.<\/p>\n<p>The final thing to check is whether you\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/fix-missing-page-view-broken-triggers\/\"><strong>incorrectly overwritten the <code>dataLayer<\/code><\/strong><\/a> and thus broken GTM\u2019s triggers.<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1452 \/ 564;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2019\/09\/no-page-view.jpg\" title=\"No page view event\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"564\" width=\"1452\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2019\/09\/no-page-view.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"No page view event\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A tell-tale sign is that there\u2019s no \u201cPage View\u201d event in <code>dataLayer<\/code>, as this is automatically generated by the container snippet and would be overwritten with the <code>dataLayer<\/code>. However, if GTM\u2019s container manages to load before the overwrite happens, you might still see the Page View event even if it\u2019s absent from the <code>dataLayer<\/code>. This leaves you with a couple of options to verify if this is the case:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Open the <strong>JavaScript Console<\/strong>, and type <code>window.dataLayer<\/code> and press enter. The array should be empty or there should be no object with <code>gtm.js<\/code> as the value of the <code>event<\/code> key.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Open the <strong>JavaScript Console<\/strong>, and type <code>window.dataLayer.push({event: 'debug'})<\/code> and press enter. If <code>dataLayer<\/code> is broken, you <strong>will not<\/strong> see an event with the name <strong>debug<\/strong> appear in the Preview mode message list.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 1110 \/ 742;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2019\/09\/datalayer-broken.jpg\" title=\"dataLayer broken\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"742\" width=\"1110\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2019\/09\/datalayer-broken.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"dataLayer broken\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>If this is the case, you need to convert that overwrite into a safer format, mainly a <code>dataLayer.push()<\/code>. Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/gtm-tips\/datalayer-declaration-vs-push\/\">this article<\/a> for the steps on how to do so.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>If Click variables are undefined, it\u2019s almost always because you neglected to create the necessary trigger(s).<\/p>\n<p>However, there are some edge cases where you or your devs have inadvertently overwritten Google Tag Manager\u2019s <code>dataLayer<\/code>, which results in GTM being unresponsive to <code>dataLayer.push()<\/code> commands, including those created by the triggers.<\/p>\n<p>With the steps in this article, you should get your Click variables to populate with useful data in no time!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A surprisingly common question in forums and communities seems to be why the built-in Click variables show up as undefined in Google Tag Manager\u2019s Preview mode, even if you click around the site.
