NFTs are making huge waves around the world and have gone from virtually unknown to the cultural cache of appearing on the New York Times Sunday edition front page and featuring on a South Park in just 1 years time. <\/span><\/p>\n

They featured at Miami\u2019s art festival Art Basal and are hitting record sale prices at auction houses like Christys and Sothebys and are popping up as profile pictures for celebs everywhere. How can you find your place in this movement?<\/span><\/p>\n

NFTs and web design are not too far apart. Web designers are inherently creative and technical, already in position to break through to this world \u2013 just waiting for the right article to tell you how.<\/span><\/p>\n

First let\u2019s look at what NFTs are and what they can do\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

What is an NFT?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

An NFT is a non-fungible token that proves you own a \u201cone-of-a-kind\u201d digital asset. It can be a jpg of a meme<\/a>, your photography<\/a>, an audio file of music<\/a>, a video clip <\/a>\u00a0\u2013 anything non-physical. NFT\u2019s are dynamic \u2013 they can be tweets, or even code. Coca cola<\/a> minted NFTs of sounds, a coke bottle opening, and coke being poured over ice.<\/span><\/p>\n

More Than An Image \u2013 Creative Potential<\/span><\/h2>\n

While some NFTs are simply collectible art to pop into a social media profile pic space, others represent tangible assets and have a utility in the digital world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NFTs Can Provide Access<\/h3>\n

Some NFTs represent membership like the collections of Gary Vaynerchuk\u2019s VeeFriends<\/a>\u00a0 or Bored Ape Yacht Club<\/a> . These exclusive communitites have access to private events, early access to brand launches, conference passes, or concerts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NFTs can also unlock doors in the digital world giving you entry to virtual gaming events or can let you earn in-game rewards like shields and swords. There is even virtual real estate that you can purchase through NFTs in a space called Decentraland.<\/p>\n

NFTs Can Be Tied to Physical Assets<\/strong><\/h3>\n

NFTS can come loaded with cryptocurrency, or be paired with physical objects.\u00a0 Nike\u2019s<\/a> Cryptokicks shoes that come with a corresponding NFT tracking ownership on the blockchain. In 2020, counterfit sneakers represented a $450 billion dollar market<\/a>. NFTs can work like a certificate of authenticity while also providing a fun experience to customers. Nike\u2019s Cryptokicks let shoe owners \u201cbreed\u201d their sneaker NFTs similar to cryptokitties<\/a>, but in Nike\u2019s case you can actually get the hybrid shoe made, effectively making you a shoe designer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Austrian and Swiss post offices have issued stamps, that have corresponding digital stamp NFTs \u2013 there is no limit. <\/span><\/p>\n

Tim Berner\u2019s Lee recently sold an NFT of the world wide web source code<\/a> at Sothebys, including the original time-stamped files containing the source code, and animated visualization of the code, a signed digital poster, and a physical letter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why do they have value?<\/span><\/h2>\n

It is the same reason we stood in line for hours to get the limited edition Princess Diana tribute beanie baby, or hoped that the pokemon card pack would contain within its foil wrapping a rare holographic Charzard. They have value because they are finite and because they are collectible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s also a \u201cwho\u2019s collecting what\u201d element tied to this. Similar the art world, the status of the buyer can have an impact. If an artist has their work purchased and added to a well-known collector\u2019s gallery, everyone now wants the artist\u2019s art. Same concept applies here.<\/span><\/p>\n

When a celebrity or sports star purchases specific NFTs, its value rises.<\/p>\n

The economic value assigned to NFTs is a compilation of urgency, nostalgia, scarcity, pleasure and status. who has the NFT\u2019s in their collection, scarcity and pleasure. Just like how we assign value to pieces of paper for our currency, it has value because we say so.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Makes it Work Technically?<\/span><\/h2>\n

NFTs are\u00a0 bought and sold using cryptocurrency and\u00a0 are tracked with unique metadata through the blockchain with Smart contracts. The Smart contract is executed during the NFT minting process. It allows the ownership of the NFT to be digitally tracable through the blockchain. This means there are no forgeries possible and only one authenticated owner of this one-of-a-kind item. Now, in the case of the stamps, there may be 150,000 copies of the same jpeg image representing this digital stamp out there \u2013 but each copy is assigned its own unique token. No two NFTs are the same.<\/span><\/p>\n

Smart contracts are contained within the blockchain and once executed, mint the NFT. The ownership is digitally traceable through the blockchain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Companies Are Looking for NFT Artists<\/h3>\n

Brands are jumping on and searching the internet for NFT creators and artists to partner with them in minting NFTs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to a global analysis<\/a> done by nonfungible.com<\/span><\/a> in Q2 of 2021 there were 177,048 active wallets and only 29,709 NFT sellers.\u00a0 That means there are nearly 6x the number of people looking to acquire NFTs as there are sellers of them. These are great numbers for someone looking get started.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are a couple examples of brands you know minting NFTs.<\/span><\/p>\n

TacoBell\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

TacoBell released 25 NFT tokens, 5 of which were animated GIFs. They sold out in 30 minutes. The profits all went to scholarship fund called Live M\u00e1s. A surprise perk was that each NFT came loaded with a $500 electronic gift card to TacoBell!<\/p>\n

The NBA realized that NFTs were the perfect vehicle to capitalize on video highlight clips of favorite players, launching Top Shot<\/a>. This website has been a wild success earning the NBA $250 million in the first 5 months. The income doesn\u2019t stop when the NFTs are sold, if a fan later resells that NFT the NBA pockets a royalty from each transaction.<\/p>\n

Pringles released 50 cryptocrisp<\/span><\/a> NFTs marketplace, giving all profits to the artist that collaborated with them on the design.<\/p>\n
