<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nSORIAH with HANS JOACHIM ROEDELIUS \/ NORMAN WESTBERG \u2013 LUMINA<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\nEven though he has released music since 2006, and some of the albums on the Projekt <\/em>label, I had not heard anything from Soriah<\/a><\/em><\/strong> before. Obviously, a collaboration with experimental legends like Hans-Joachim Roedelius<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (Cluster)<\/em> and Norman Westberg<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (Swans)<\/em> is a good way to get into the spotlight!<\/p>\nSoriah<\/em><\/strong> is the \u2018stage persona\u2019 for Enrique Ugalde<\/em><\/strong>, born in California but now based in Oregon as well as in the Tuvan Republic (Russia). He practices the traditional Kh\u00f6\u00f6mei<\/a> (Tuvan throat singing), but blends it with \u2018his own visceral voice\u2019<\/em>, and with playing the igil<\/a> (a two-stringed instrument of the Tuvan steppes).<\/p>\nOn the two 12-minute tracks on Lumina<\/em><\/strong>, his throat singing blends beautifully with the pipe organ played by Roedelius<\/em><\/strong> (on Alba Via<\/em>, which means White Road<\/em>) and with Westberg\u2019s<\/em><\/strong> drone guitar (on Mirrored in Amber)<\/em>.
Some of the music sounds rather dark, and (to my ears) throat-singing is always somewhat haunting, but still \u2018this work intends on bringing peace to lost souls of those who have recently passed. Not to bring the\u00a0dead back into the corporeal, but to help them achieve their proper plane of existence\u00a0through a series of humming pathways.
