{"id":94638,"date":"2025-02-18T00:32:19","date_gmt":"2025-02-18T00:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/stevenson-high-promises-policy-changes-after-palestinian-display-draws-objections-cair-chicago\/"},"modified":"2025-02-18T00:32:19","modified_gmt":"2025-02-18T00:32:19","slug":"stevenson-high-promises-policy-changes-after-palestinian-display-draws-objections-cair-chicago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=94638","title":{"rendered":"Stevenson High promises policy changes after Palestinian display draws objections \u2014 CAIR-Chicago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/5aeb7bb8e2ccd14dfc3d03ff\/ee55a967-ca8a-49cf-846b-deae28877d9f\/stevenson.jpeg?format=1500w\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><span class=\"sqsrte-text-color--lightAccent\">Stevenson High School District 125 officials said Tuesday they will institute policy changes after a pro-Palestinian student group was required to cover up and remove \u201cfalse and inaccurate information\u201d in their school cultural fair display over the weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><span class=\"sqsrte-text-color--lightAccent\">The students\u2019 poster board identified \u201cPalestine located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River,\u201d and an image depicting colors of a watermelon \u2014 which has been used in protests and artwork as its colors match the Palestinian flag \u2014 overlaying the borders of Israel\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><span class=\"sqsrte-text-color--lightAccent\"><strong>Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Chicago office of the <\/strong><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cairchicago.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"sqsrte-text-color--lightAccent\"><strong>Council on American-Islamic Relations<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span class=\"sqsrte-text-color--lightAccent\">, sent a letter to district officials Tuesday asking that Stevenson be a \u201csacred space\u201d for the free expression of conscience and that differences be negotiated through debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><span class=\"sqsrte-text-color--lightAccent\">Whatever review processes are put in place going forward, Rehab said they should be equitable for all groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><span class=\"sqsrte-text-color--lightAccent\"><strong>\u201c<em>Here we have a situation where it is attempting to silence and confiscate people\u2019s freedom of expression<\/em>,\u201d Rehab said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><span class=\"sqsrte-text-color--lightAccent\">He questioned if there would be the same reaction if a Russian group objected to a Ukrainian student putting up a map that included Crimea as part of Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><span class=\"sqsrte-text-color--lightAccent\">\u201c<em>That map means what they mean it to mean \u2026 the legacy of Palestinians is throughout this whole land,<\/em>\u201d Rehab said. \u201c<em>Their stories are throughout this whole land, their ancestry throughout this whole land. This isn\u2019t even a political statement.
