[I had
\noriginally planned a series on historical inaugurations this week, but I don\u2019t
\nimagine too many of us want to be thinking about the inauguration any more than
\nwe have to. So instead, I\u2019m gonna go with a suggestion from my wife, using the
\noccasion of MLK Day to highlight a handful of historical quotes, from him and
\nothers, that our conservative commentators and politicians tend to get very
\nwrong!]<\/p>\n

I\u2019m no religious
\nscholar, but I have read every word in the Bible (for a college class), and here
\nare three quotes therein I think conservatives get wrong:<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Leviticus<\/a>: I don\u2019t think
\nI can say it any better than Jed Bartlett did in that hyperlinked scene. But he\u2019s
\nquoting a ton of different Old Testament Books, and I would argue that simply
\nreading all of Leviticus<\/a>
\nmakes it far more difficult to single out the single verse (18:22) about men
\nlying with men as some sort of particularly significant prohibition. After all,
\nLeviticus dedicates something like twenty straight verses to which animals the
\npeople of Israel can
\nand can\u2019t eat<\/a>, and I would be willing to bet that just about everyone who
\nreferences Leviticus to excuse homophobia regularly eats many of the prohibited
\nmeats. A little consistency please, bigots.<\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201cAn eye for an eye\u201d: Hammurabi\u2019s Code<\/a>,
\nto my understanding the origin point for the \u201ceye for an eye\u201d argument for the
\ndeath penalty and similarly retributive punishments, is already far lengthier
\nand more complicated than that simplified phrase. But for conservative Christians
\nwho seek to support the death penalty, it\u2019s the Book of
\nExodus<\/a> to which they turn. It\u2019s true that Exodus 21:24-25 does delineate
\nsuch punishments with that \u201ceye for an eye\u201d phrase, but that\u2019s in response to a
\nvery specific situation: \u201cIf men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that
\nher fruit depart from her, and mischief follow\u201d (meaning I believe death or
\nother grievous injury to the woman). Even if we want to use the Bible to
\ninfluence our justice system (and I do not want that), this section ain\u2019t an
\noverarching frame for that effort.<\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Jesus<\/a>: Mostly I
\nwant to ask you all to read that blog post, written by what seems to be an
\nardent believer, making the case for Jesus as at least anti-capitalist and ultimately
\n(and this is where I would land as well) quite overtly socialist. I know those
\nframes didn\u2019t exist a couple thousand years ago, but the ideas behind them have
\nalways been part of human societies, as has for example the debate between a
\nmore individualist and a more collectivist way of thinking. If Jesus was
\nanything, he seems to have been thoroughly collectivist, and I believe if
\nconservative Christians were truly to follow his model, they and we would be in
\na very different place today.<\/span><\/p>\n
