the Maldives, I\u2019ve dug out some pics from a very different kind of shipwreck, one from much closer to home.\u00a0 In fact all of these images were taken within a few miles of each other off the coast of the northeast of England and southeast Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Wrecks are common around the UK.\u00a0 Stormy weather and a lot of shipping have combined to create a huge number of wrecks, often taking many lives.\u00a0 Whilst these tragedies have now happily passed beyond memory, the wrecks are now amazing places to explore, even in the gloom of UK waters thick with silt and plankton.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reefs.com\/?attachment_id=167320\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-167320\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-167320\" broken up, with only the really robust structurers such as propellers and boilers surviving.\u00a0 For anyone interested in engineering these can be fascinating as well.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption-text\">an anchor from an unknown vessel<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Whilst these wrecks are rusty, silty places, they are not devoid of life.\u00a0 On the images above, the blobby white and orange structures are a type of coral, <em>Alcyonium digitatum,<\/em> or Dead Mens\u2019 Fingers as it is gruesomely known.\u00a0 Up close you can see they are colonial in nature and covered with polyps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reefs.com\/?attachment_id=167323\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-167323\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-167323\" jewels, from beautiful semi-transparent anemones like The Plumose Anemone to delicate nudibranchs that feed on the hydrozoans and bryozoans that grow on the metal structures.<\/p>\n<div
